Hi,
For the last 3 versions of suse, after a variable amount of time (from a few
to several tens of minutes) in every session, my dvd and cd drives stop
working.
The motherboard is a ASUS P5N-E SLI. The dvd-rw drive (samsung) and an older
pioneer dvd-rom drives work OK under XP.
I even have updated the firmware of the dvd-rw drive, but it made no
difference at all.
The only thing that seems to cure this is adding “noapic” to the boot
options, but I have no explanation for this. This is the case also in 11.3.
Can anybody suggest what could be this problem related to, so I can
investigate a bit further and submit a bug report?
So are you using a SLI setup? Do you have nVidia video card(s)? Have you installed the nVidia proprietary binary driver (ask for more help on this item if you have not yet done so)? Have you tried upgrading the motherboard BIOS (Don’t update the motherboard BIOS unless you know what you are doing and be aware that this can go wrong and disable the motherboard)?
Most often such behavior (CD ROM drives stop working after a short time period) is hardware related, but it may not actually be a problem with the CD ROM drives, it could be a video driver problem, for instance. You might consider disconnecting them (your optical drives) one at a time to see if one will work while the other will not work.

Yes, and kept updated though suse 11.0 until now (just installed 11.3).

No I have not updated the bios. I am a bit hesitant about doing it and
ending up with an over-sized paperweight :-/

Yes, good idea. The odd thing is that it all works fine in XP, it is only in
linux that this problem happens and it is cured with the noapic flag. If
somebody has a further idea, I would be grateful to hear it.
