Thread: Firefox font rendering issue

    Default Firefox font rendering issue

    Hi,

I am facing some problems in font rendering issue for Urdu (South Asian language). Actually the alphabets are being displayed as, for example, "a p p l e" instead of "apple" - if you see this website, probably you will see the gaps in alphabets are making them difficult to read.

    ‭BBC Urdu‬ - ‮صفحۂ اول‬

I have installed at least 10 different Urdu fonts but still no help, then I tried adding:

MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO="0" to /etc/environment but it also did not helped.

Is there any other way to fix this? Ideas will be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Note: I am using OpenSuse 11.2, Firefox 3.5.10

I have only on item you might want to check for openSUSE font settings that affects Firefox if you use the KDE desktop. Go to Menu / Personnel Settings / General - Look & Fell - Appearance / GTK Styles & Fonts. I am told that this is the place to check how Firefox is dealing with your system font settings. System Font settings are in the same basic menu, but just called Fonts. You seem to need to make changes in both places for Firefox. Now did you know that you can borrow fonts from a Windows installation? You can use the Font installer at Menu / Personnel Settings /General - Computer Administration - Font Installer. Windows fonts are normally located in:

    Code:
     c:\windows\fonts
In openSUSE this same place may be called:

    Code:
    /Windows/C/Windows/Fonts
I normally install my favorite Window's font into openSUSE.

If you copy the windows Fonts folder to SUSE's /home/username
    Rename it to MSFonts
    Then place it in /usr/share/fonts

Use dolphin super user mode to do that or su - terminal

    Thanks for response guys.

caf4926, see this screen shot (particularly the red en-circled area)

If you compare it with your screen shot for BBC, you will find that the words are broken. I don't know how to fix this.

jdmcdanie, I am not using Windows at all and have not installation on system - however, I downloaded various fonts from Internet but that didn't helped. Actually, I left windows about 1 year ago and switch to Mandriva where I didn't face this issue and now I switched to OpenSuse because of some reasons.

And, I forgot to mention that I am facing similar issue in THunderbird also

Any other ideas? Is it possible that this issue is due to "encoding"?

    Thanks.

Did you look at any of the fonts available here:

I'm just guessing a bit... I do see the gaps vs. MSIE with what
    openSUSE comes with.

In pursuit of solution, I have installed these fonts (so far):

    Islamic_Caligraphy,
    UL Sajid Heading,
    Nafees,
    Fajer Noori Nastalique
    Urdu Naksh Asia Type
    Jameel Noori Nastaleeq
    PDMS Saleem Quran Font
    PDMS Quran Font
    Jameel Noori Kasheeda
    Alvi
    Darussalam Tughari
    Diwani Bent
    UL Amjad
    Arabic Newspaper
I recently switched from Mandriva 2010 to Opensuse 11.2, in Mandriva -- I had only one font installed (Jameel Noori Nastaleeq) and never had any problem with any website. Gaps to some extent may be acceptable but if you can read Urdu, see above screen shot - it is totally making the phrases unreadable (because many words are broken)

@caf4946: My font settings are for Sans (rest all is same as yours).

Edit: Note some letters are being shown as BLOCKS (see screen shot, firefox tab in task bar).
