Thread: Font smoothing in Firefox only (ok elsewhere!)

Default Font smoothing in Firefox only (ok elsewhere!)

    Hi folks,

I am using freefonts2 packages with subpixel hinting support, but it is strange that some websites still show ugly fonts, i.e Make the most of Skype - free internet calls and great value calls

Here a screenshot (comparison between chrome and firefox): http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/2...eenshotsjh.png

Do you have any idea how to solve this issue? There are several websites showing ugly fonts, the rest is fine.

    Kind regards,
    Quentin

Same issue with rough fonts here with Firefox 3.6.4, Konqueror 4.4.4 and 3.5.* .

    Chromium and Opera look smooth.

Not sure, which fonts are installed in my system though, but I am pretty sure the problem can be seen out of the box with default fonts.

I have found one more site, where rough fonts can be seen.
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community

    Still no solution.

I don't have the problems you have.
I have windows ttf fonts installed and have changed the bytecode interpreter to 18 in sysconfig and have very nice looking fonts in all applications using KDE.

Could this thread perhaps be of help. . .

Subpixel Hinting Packages (Ubuntu Lucid Patches) are now available for 11.3

Thank you for the link, farcusnz.

I tried different solutions from that and other threads,
but above-mentioned web-pages still look the same.

I will leave it as is for the time being.

I don't think this is a solution to what you are after but is perhaps an alternative.

It has given me fantastic looking fonts since Opensuse10.1

It's an old guide but easily adaptable for Opensuse 11.3

Optimal Use of MS TrueType Core Fonts for a KDE Desktop on SuSE - openSUSE

some of the steps will have changed a little what with the changes in yast2 and moving from KDE3 to KDE4 but I'm sure you'll work it out.
MSfonts can be found in yast2 but do not include tahoma - if you have a windows disk around somewhere it should be on that.
There is a link on teh above page to a package that includes the Tahoma fonts. Haven't tested it with 11.3 though.

Thanks for the hint. I will look into that.
