Most of us don’t use Compiz in kde4, prefering kwin
http://wiki.opensuse.org/Compiz_Fusion

Likewise, KDE4 Kwin is pretty cool and can do all I want…the spinning
cube (or in Kwin’s method spinning/rolling…). Compiz if for us
Gnome-ites as well <ducking>

Isn’t the Fusion Icon needed in KDE? Can’t be sure. But Ian’s guide
should help

Compiz as a composite manager offers a little bit more and has other intentions than KDE4 / KWin… I use KWin as well, but I don’t quite understand why it is recommended as a substitute for Compiz so often.

Please tell us which GFX-card you are using and whether a xorg.conf is used. In many cases window decoration in Compiz fail because Composite is not enabled properly.

There is a check box for window decorations in Compizonfig Setting Manager

missed it, clicking provides decorations but none if the windows
are movable (another setting?)

strange BUT before up’ing to 11.3 compiz worked fine (though only
the version in 11.2 oss, not 9.0)

ok, there’s a “move window” setting - now checked

It appears my earlier config files (except emerald’s) were not
being used, did the location/name change?

thanks, I’m up and running

thanks

of course they changed - now:
~/config/compiz/compizconfig-1/config

Yes there is just type move in the search box

I believe the:

13.) For KDE4 users, To set compiz as the default window manager open Configure Desktop (Personal Settings). Then click Default Applications. Click Window Manager and choose Use a different window manager. Use the drop down menu to choose Compiz (not Compiz custom).

still holds true for the KDE 4.4.4 version as well. 4.5 is when they start moving stuff around. I’ll have to check that out and make any necessary changes.

Take Care,

Ian

There should be freedom of choice.
Like it or not compiz is preforming same
effects faster on MY laptop.

Really, I do not write it to be mean and write bad
things about Kwin, but If it works faster
for me on my computer, so why not have it.

I like a lot default kde windows decorations and emerald
is not for my taste. Why does it not work out of the box
to have compiz-fusion and KDE windows decorations ?

Um… sorry, but did anyone question that in this thread?

It’s been a while since I have used Compiz regularly, but switching windecos was never a problem for me. I used fusion-icon for that.

yea, well probably it was too hot reaction of mine. When someone ask some help with compiz often someone “suggests” Kwin instead/(in addition) of a help. Just felt like poking back :P. sorry.

I got kde windows decorator working. (Compiz-fuzion from one-click install, on KDE4.4.4)

  1. open Compizconfig setting manager (ccsm)
  2. go to tab window decorations (tick for enable windows decorations)
  3. In the field “command” enter
kde4-window-decorator --replace
  1. back and close. Should be working.

That (‘kde4-window-decorator --replace’) is pretty much what fusion-icon does when switching windeco.

Thanks,

I should take a look into this fusion-icon. I once got it installed
but didn;t really understand what’s it for :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers

The fusion-icon is not necessary at all. i don´t see why somebody should switch the decorator … i got 2 kde 4.5 running on 2 different machines and tried the kwin desktop-effects when they came up . . . but as i work with a lot of different windows kwin often seems to lag and takes too much of cpu power. as i switched to compiz everything was fine again. even if i run 20 windows at the same time, everything is fine smooth.

But today I was wondering . . . I´m just installing a 11.3 x64 on a Notebook and see that the “compiz-emerald” Package is not in the REPOS !!!

I imported the Index of /repositories/X11:/Compiz/openSUSE_11.3 and as I can`t find the package I took it from Index of /distribution/11.1/repo/oss

and now everything is fine again . . .!!!

Although at the moment i prefer compiz, i must say Kwin is advancing very nicely.
an one day i might switch to Kwin completely.

All the best for both.

i don´t see why somebody should switch the decorator …
because I do not like emerald,
For me it is too robust. I do not want to spend days to configure window decoration to what i want.
The title bar in most of emerald themes is too big/thick and transparency puzzles me and so on…

I agree with you, that the configuration process at all is a bit tricky in conjunktion with KDE. Especially are there some dependencies missing.

But if you use the simple-ccsm-kde4 script and change the default window manager it is really as simple as using the kwin ones.

That’s your problem of selecting the right template for your need . … there are hundred’s of . . .

Best wishes. . . .
