Thread: ifconfig?

  1. #1

    Default ifconfig?

I come from ubuntu were ifconfig is used to check my ip address and cards on my computer. I have openSuSE 11.2 on acer aspire 5515. When I run the command I get

    acer@linux-ukd8:/etc> ifconfig
Absolute path to 'ifconfig' is '/sbin/ifconfig', so running it may require superuser privileges (eg. root).
You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/acer
    acer@linux-ukd8:/etc> sudo ifconfig
    root's password:
    sudo: ifconfig: command not found

so what command do I use in place of ifconfig

    lancebermudez;

    Just use:
    Code:
    /sbin/ifconfig
/sbin is not in the path of a regular user.

    su (root)
    password:
    then ifconfig

to get the right path, as per Where Is Ifconfig And Iwconfig - openSUSE Forums

Or just use the ip command; it's the future, doesn't require 'root', and
it's easy (handles more than ifconfig too):

    ip addr
    ip route
    ip link

    Good luck.

+1 for ip, but ifconfig doesn't require root privilege if you just want to view. I usually handle this by symlinking /sbin/ifconfig to ~/bin. Other ways include adding /sbin and /usr/sbin to PATH, or using an alias (not so good for non-interactive invocation).

    Do not use
    Code:
    su
    but
    Code:
    su -
And you get the correct path as a bonus to security.

Yes... you're right and I was unclear. ifconfig doesn't require root
    privs for displaying.

    Good luck.
