    How do I put them back on?

    Thanks

    I know how to get rid of "Places", "Preview" etc. but how to remove the "File - Edit" bar?
    Fumbled around a bit with dolphin, but I cannot find where the appearance of "Places" etc is set.....Not in dolphinrc anyway. Can you post contents of ~/kde4/share/config/dolphinrc ? Here's mine, from a working dolphin:

    Maybe you can find a difference, that leads to the origin of dolphin sufferings.
    Do you have the idea you did this yourself, or could it be some kwin / qt error as well ?

    In my Dolphin there is an item "Instellingen" (Configuration?) where you can switch off Menubar, But where to switch on when it is gone?

    One can of course remove the config files (like dolphinrc, are there more?) and Dolphin will create new ones, but then all the other things you configured are also gone.

    Did a find in ~/.kde4, only found ./share/config/dolphinrc and ./share/apps/dolphin

    Got it guys. In dolphinrc you have this entry if the menu bar is ON:
    Code:
    [MainWindow]
    Height 900=549
    MenuBar=Enabled
    State=blah blah blah blah
    Width 1600=964
    And this if the menu bar is OFF
    Code:
    [MainWindow]
    Height 900=549
    State=blah blah blah blah
    Width 1600=964
    So to turn it back on again one has to edit in this line by hand:
    Code:
    MenuBar=Enabled
    Which is of course *nuts* but true.

    And once you have restored the menu bar, you can use the view menu to restore the shortcuts.

    John, just remove ~/.kde4/share/config/dolphinrc

    I forced it into your situation, it suddenly contained a line 'Menubar=disabled', I removed that line, no result. Removed dolphinrc, it's back to normal, incl. saved "Places".

    Edit You found the better one when I was writing

    Thanks, we posted simultaneously. Much like I found. But if you think about it, it's a big design flaw IMHO.

    Yep, this is one of those things where I cannot stop thinking that there should be a way to do this from a click in the GUI, but I cannot find it.
    I'll check on the kde forums next time I'm there.

    Ctrl+M shows/hides the menu bar and after that all could be added back from the drop-down menus. You can also click with the second button of the mouse on the empty space next to the folders and there is an option "show main menu" or something like that
