Your options at this time are:

    1) Use the Compaq, but I think you should check the state of the hardware on that before you use it full time. It may explain the sluggishness in some situations. Please give some details of it:
    • What model number (there were several Presarios over the years)
    • How much memory (RAM) in GB or MB
    • What processor and speed in GHz or MHz
    • Which operating system(s) are you using (you mentioned Suse 10.2 somewhere).
    • Which operating system(s) do you want to use i.e. Suse or Suse and Windows.
I found some Linux commands... brace yourself, I'm going to show off:

Would you like the entire contents of: dmicode | less ?

    2) Use the Sony VAIO after converting the 500GB drive to a system disk.

    • You would have to check you can boot from a USB drive. Is that option available in the BIOS?
    • You would have to shift important stuff off the 500GB drive to somewhere else.

    Awaiting your info.
I can't remember how to get into the BIOS... I have to do that during bootup, don't I? Just at or about the SONY logo? Is it F2, F5, what fucntion key?

As for the Maxtor 500GB HD, I can backup any data, no problem.
