    Default Installation problems!Help!!!SOS!!!!!

Today I have got the SUSE11.2,but when I try to install it on VMware,a problem occurs: after the Kernel is loaded, the VMware is hung with a message (probe edd=off to disable). I search the problem and get an answer: use "edd=off" argument after the linux command, but it doesn't work. Now who can help me? What's the problem on earth!

edd=off has to be added to the kernel boot argument at boot. Is that what you did.

I don't use vmware because it's so fussy.
Virtual Box is so much easier

You are right, I use vbox instead of VMware. It works!

I am using vmware (server 2 and player 3 and in the company worstation 7)
and it works with opensuse, sles and sled (the two latter ones for testing
    and evaluation purposes).
Where does the info come from to use edd=off? Never used that, never heard
about that it is necessary. But maybe there is something special in your
    setup, I don't know.

What version are you running (vmware)?
What version of Opensuse (I mean 32 or 64 bit)? Which kernel (desktop,
    default, something other)?

Or you can switch to virtual box as the others suggest. I can see many
threads here about vbox so it seems there are much more vbox users around
who can help you with it than vmware users (like me).

I am having the same exact problems!

My SLES11 installations will periodically just stops on boot at the "Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... ok" prompt.

But I do not have the option of moving to vbox! Also when I add edd=off as a boot option, the VM stills freezes only without the Probing EDD prompt.

I believe that the EDD this works fine, it just happens to be the last message we see on the screen!

Is this a VMWare problem, SuSE problem? Regardless I need to fix this NOW!

hi Robert, welcome...but this is the openSUSE place, SLES is a
commercial product supported over at forums.novell.com

you are welcome to hang out here and see if any one with any SLES
experience happens by, but you should expect better service over on
    the commercial side..

the pass/ID you used to sign in here will work fine there too..

Thanks, but I'm not getting any answers over there either!

SLES is just a subset of SuSE and from what I've read this issue exists whether we are talking about 2.4 or 2.6 Linux Kernels, Redhat, Suse or Debian!

Please don't get hung up on SLES just think SuSE 11.1

From what I have read Vmware has no interest in fixing the problems with there 'free' server version for linux.
This can only mean the problems will get worse over time (even if you do find a work around for now).

But I do not have the option of moving to vbox!
In the end you may have no choice but to move to a paid for version of Vmware.(as they would like you to do).
