    "fdisk -l" doesn't show any thing here, because alignment of Win7 changed. Try: "fdisk -l -u"

    Regarding extended partitions Vista and Win7 are incompatible with Linux distros using libparted<2.2. A save way to compatible install an older Linux distribution: just use the possible forth primary partition. But you will not have swap and home as extra partitions.

    Warning using old alignment (libparted<2.2): If you touch any partition using Win7 (e.g. format an usb stick), your grub installation won't be able to boot from an extended partitions any more...

    Ooooooh, take a good look at the beginnings and ends of the partitions in the pic, no good. Correct me if i'm wrong.

    Have you checked out post #3 and #18 ?

    How and why windows recognised /dev/sda4 and used /dev/sda5 is beyond me.

    There was also a third party partitioning tool involved also.
