Thread: How to get Kaffeine to play wmv

Default How to get Kaffeine to play wmv

I'm running Kaffeine on openSUSE 11.2. (The version of Kaffeine is whatever was included in that distribution.)

I noticed Kaffeine does not play wmv files. An "error" message appears with no details when I try to play one.

So I followed the instructions in the Kaffeine FAQ on how to add support for wmv: It's supposed to be a simple matter of downloading the win32 codecs and extracting to /usr/lib/win32 (see FAQ | Kaffeine - KDE Media Player).

Still doesn't work. I tried extracting the codecs to usr/local/lib/win32 (this folder is mentioned in codecs README as another possible location). This doesn't help.

Anyone with the same issue figure this out?

Thanks, but just to be clear: Will following the procedure described there add wmv support to *kaffeine*?

You know if caf4926 tells you it is so, you can take it to the bank. Have you checked out her reputation here, it is perfect. You need to do some reading on the subject and you will see what you need to do. I have been playing my small collection of WMV movie files with kaffeine version 1 that comes with openSUSE just before I decided to put my two cents in. Kaffeine works like a champ and yours can too if you follow the information provided to you.

That depends how carefully and accurately you follow the guide. I have had plenty of people swear blind they followed it and it doesn't work. Only to find, after much investigation, that such was not the case.

    Will .wmv work. Probably.
But you know it's krappy M$ 'Bull'. And it may depend on what the file is exactly.

Yes Kaffeine plays WMV fine after adding the multimedia support in the link specified.

It's unfortunately the case that there are conflicting (and in this case incomplete) instructions about what to do with Kaffeine for restricted media support. So don't feel bad about it. But a tip to anybody having difficulty with any particular feature in openSUSE: It's probably easier than you think so ask around. Most likely someone has made a easy way to do what you want. If you wandering down alleys that tell you to extract tar files, or install something by hand, stop! Ask around and there will probably be an easier way 95% of the time.

Well there are several levels of documentation, generic Linux knowledge, the generic KDE documentation, the Kaffeine help, and then the openSUSE wiki and forums. Perhaps a piece of good advice in the beginner's document would be to start with the most specific forum and then move outwards.

    Never mind Ken,
I thought this 'and in this case incomplete' was referring to the forum guide I quoted earlier, which specifically instructs users to have run the package switch on Packman and to use all multi-media from there.

Yes, I meant the KDE help, which gives the harder way to add codecs.
