Xorg often crashes whithout any apparent reason. The system shows a strange behavior afterwards.
I had those crashes when using open office, gimp or lyx and only while one of their windows had the focus.
In open office the will happen without me doing anything.
In gimp it only happened while using the foreground selection, and lyx I haven’t used enough to say anything about it.
After the crash the screen freezes; I can only move the cursor, but not as fluently as usual.
I can still login over the network (ssh) and it looks like I can do anything except killing Xorg or rebooting, so probably more of the system has crashed than just Xorg. The system did not crash when using these applications within Xephyr or Xnest, however, so it seem to have to do with Xorg.
Magic sysrq keys still seem to work, though the screen content does not change so I only saw the effect of alt-sysrq-b (reboot).
Does anyone have any idea what this strange behavior might come from/how it could be fixed?

Desktop effects? Do you mean the effects in compiz? If you do, no, I’m using kwin.

xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd (Graphics card:ATI-Radeon-X800-XT)
Which other drivers could be relevant?[/QUOTE]
Sorry, I meant graphics-card driver.:shame:
Kwin has it’s own desktop effects.
To check if you have them enabled go to System Settings->Desktop->Desktop Effects.
And could you post the content of /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
And the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
I can’t post my Xorg.0.log. It has too many characters.
I’ve tried the driver from the ati website, which did not install (there was some strange problem with unpacking the archive if I remember correctly) and that from the ATI repository for SUSE 11.2. It did install, but there was some problem, too, I think though I don’t remember exactly what it was.
I guess some info about the hardware is needed. Also run the memory check from the install media overnight. Also would not hurt to run the media check to be sure that what you installed was not corrupted.
All the logs I posted are from immediately after a freeze. I first started into runlevel 2 and copied the files before going to runlevel 5 and posting the copies.
BTW Can you easily recreate a freeze?
One way I already mentioned is the foreground selection in gimp. Now I’ve found another one that works quite reliably: I go to the dvi preview in lyx, hold the left mouse button pressed over the preview and move the mouse around. X freezes within about a sendond.
In Xorg .0.log I found the following error lines:
(EE) Failed to load module "type1" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "freetype" (module does not exist, 0)
both are almost at the beginning of the file.
I only have nVidia cards so I’m not sure but maybe the propritary driver is more stable.
Try them again to see if they don’t create a freeze.
Those two modules are both about fonts.
Freetype is no longer needed since openSUSE 11.1.
I’m not sure about type1 but I think it isn’t needed either.
So you can remove or comment out the lines under the module section:
I tried the proprietary driver and X didn’t start any more (No screens found). According to the German SUSE wiki, the proprietary driver only works with cards that are stille supported by ATI. Mine isn’t.
Sorry, I didn’t know that.
There’s nothing else to it then using the opensource driver again.
When you have them installed try renaming xorg.conf with this command and reboot:
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.BU
When you reboot there’s no xorg.conf so a new one will be created.
If you’ve done that could you post your xorg.conf?
X did not automatically create a new xorg.conf, so I created it with sax2. I changed the resolution and monitor type (the assumed configuration was terrible for my eyes), then I saved the new config.
Sorry, you’re right in openSUSE 11.2 a xorg.conf isn’t needed.
So you can try two things:
See if you can recreate the freeze with your new xorg.conf.
See if you can recreate the freeze with no xorg.conf.
You say that you have a Radeon X800 XT but in your new xorg.conf it says that you have a “Radeon X850 PRO (R480) (AGP)”.
So which card do you have?
Sometimes adding your user to the video and games group solve xorg problems.
To do this go to Yast->Security And Users->User and Group Management.
Select your user and click on edit. Go to the tab “details”.
On the right you’ll see a list with “Additional Groups”.
Select the games and video group and click OK.
