Thread: Which is the right virtualbox-repository?

Default Which is the right virtualbox-repository?

    Hi,

A long time I used the Virtualization:VirtualBox-Repository (which is still suggested in the yast-repository-module) to get the latest version, but the version 3.1.6 is still missing here.

I found that this repository will be dropped and instead Virtualization:VirtualBox_backports should be used.

But the packages there have two problems:

    • No localization is available, you can just use english
    • The kernel-modules are just available for Kernel 2.6.31.5 (there is no update-repo for updated kernels)

    Which repositories are you using?

Virtualbox for 11.2 and 11.2+Updates is now in Virtualization
    (http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...irtualization/)

Virtualbox for 11.1 is in Virtualization:VirtualBox_backports
although its not building at the moment, some sort of kmp building bug. I'll
have a look at it soon

I'm not sure why 11.2 in VirtualBox_backports is enabled, don't use it.

Does that cover what you need or do you need 11.1+Updates?

Not sure about localizations, the actual translation files are installed in
/usr/share/virtualbox/nls as they should be, but don't appear in the GUI.
    I'll do some investigation later.

    Regards,
    Tejas

For the PUEL version from the VirtualBox website, I use this repo. Add it with Yast, and you can use Yast to install (3.1.6 etc.) and update/downgrade VBox.

I never use openSUSE repositories for VirtualBox because they cripple
the module recompilation mechanism, so that "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup"
outputs a silly message instead of recompiling as it should. My advice
is therefore to download VirtualBox directly from the VirtualBox site
    as advertised on http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads.

Yes, and also they are a bit behind when a kernel update is released so if you update your kernel immediately, you will lose the use of VirtualBox until an updated VirtualBox OSE package is released.
