    Question newbie issues installing applications

    Hello all,

    I'm running:
    Release 12.2 (Mantis) 32-bit
    Kernel Linux 3.2.0-2-desktop
    GNOME 3.3.4

I'm all new to linux (0 day user).
My problem is as follows: I can't install anything through the normal software-installer or Yast.
Only the programs listed on the package repositories page installed normally.
Everything else (including the one-click install buttons) I tried to install through either of these normal installers came up with this error:

error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.PackageKit: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildSignaled: Process /lib/dbus-1/dbus-daemon-launch-helper received signal 5

So as a workaround I opened the terminal, logged in as a SU and typed: zypper install "path name and file name"
which did install the programs properly.

The programs that I installed this way were: Skype (opensuse 11+) Chrome, and adobe flash. (they're all working fine now)
Now I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, 'cause it's not supposed to be so hard is it?!

It doesn't matter if I change the user account to administrator (temporarily) either, the same error comes up. And on top of this, Could anyone explain why logging off doesn't log me off, and where on earth is the "shut down" button?? Again, I can shut down through the terminal, but isn't there a normal button somewhere?

Any useful comments are greatly appreciated,

    Cheers,

    Michael

Hello Michael and Welcome to the openSUSE forum. As an admitted 0 day user, my first suggestion is to not be running openSUSE 12.2 Milestone 1 as it is pre-beta software, potentially full of bugs and only experienced users have any real chance getting it all to work. If you look in this forum, you will see some activity with openSUSE 12.2 Pre-Release/Beta, but I would stick with openSUSE 12.1 if I was you software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 12.1.

    Thank You,

Do not install a beta version! You are not prepared for it, use a stable
version of the distro: 11.4, or 12.1.

Andd when you insist on using Pre-release 12.2 then do not ask here, but in the Pre-release/Beta subforum which is especialy for those gurus which are testing 12.2.
