Software Management Question

When viewing the respository packages I see the term “branding-upstream”.

What does that mean?

thanks, jon

it means for example if you were selecting a kde upstream you would get the vanilla kde look rather than the suse patched version.

So it’s true to type. I think I’m right:)

i suppose you intend to ask what does it mean to opensuse.org folks,
so i add a search specific site only qualifier, and:

http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Aopensuse.org+“branding-upstream”

Originally I searched this forum for branding-upstream and didn’t find an answer to my question. The link you posted points to this thread, so that didn’t help me either.

My question came about because I have recently installed 11.2 (kde) and Firefox is v3.5.8. I want to upgrade to a more recent release and saw another thread that v3.6.3 was in the repos. So I went looking for it and the only thing recent for FF was branding-upstream. So I installed the upstream branding for Mozilla (download.opensuse.org/.../mozilla/openSUSE11_2 repo) but FF help-about still indicates v3.5.8 and the @System - view repos shows I have 3.5.8 & 3.6.3 installed. And I’m totalled baffled.

CAF’s answer indicates to me in the case of FF, it changes it from Suse’s package to Mozilla’s package. Either way, why don’t I see v3.6.3 in the FF help?

hmmmm…google gave me 9000+ hits from opensuse.org which were not
this thread…

seriously, you couldn’t find anything that gave a clue what “upstream
branding” means in “developer-speak”?

i dare say that the first three hits on that list of 9000+ will fill
in a lot of the mystery in your mind…have a another thoughtful look
at the top three from google http://tinyurl.com/y8un3f7

  1. http://en.opensuse.org/Packaging/Branding
  2. http://en.opensuse.org/Making_a_openSUSE_based_distribution
  3. https://features.opensuse.org/306007

i just scanned them and think i know that applications made by (for
example) the KDE development team are ‘branded’ internally in the
source code (using icons, words, etc) as “KDE” before they are
released to the public…

when the openSUSE packagers build (say) their 11.3 release they may
add or otherwise change the internal branding (maybe by replacing the
familiar blue KDE “gear” with a gecko green launch button)…

in that case the upstream (from where the package flows) branding
has been replaced by the openSUSE dev team’s own brand…

clearer?

Yes, very much so. Thanks. This matches my assumptions. But not what I experience. I asked for the info because when I selected to install “Mozilla FF branding-upstream” from the repo I got a 7kb file for FF 3.6.3-1.2. That seems pretty tiny unless perhaps it is just some code that gets patched. The FF 3.5.8-0.1.1 is 3.4mb vs the 7kb. And when I open FF it tells me it’s 3.5.8 so I want to make sure I have done this right. Even if it is just a patch I would think that it should update the version number.

I have no idea why your google link for 9000+ posts of upstream only showed this one post. Copy/Paste doesn’t leave much chance of a typo. But it’s late here and who knows how I screwed that one up. Thanks for posting the first 3 links, I’ll read what’s there. Before posting my query I did a forum search for this phrase but in browsing several hits I didn’t find anything useful. Guess I just wasn’t lucky.

In Yast Software Repositories
Please enable and set refreshing on repo 5 (mozilla)

Close yast, then in a su terminal

zypper ref
zypper dup -r mozilla

Thanks, caf.

That did the trick. I had read somewhere in the forums that I should only have 5 repos active so I disabled Moz. I’m still on a steep learning curve.

Rgds, Jon

It’s OK to keep mozilla

Then oss, non-oss, update, packman;)
