Question KDE4: Plasma crashing after login

    Hi

I'm a new openSUSE user - I've been using fedora for some time, and decided it's time to try out something new.

Now so far my fresh 11.2 copy works pretty well - I even got my mobility radeon 3650 to work with 3d support.

There's just one minor glitch - everytime I log in after reboot, the plasma desktop crashes right at the beginning - a window appears saying something like "The desktop process unexpectedly quit" ( I have a polish version, don't know the exact translation ) and leaves me with a big red button in the middle of the screen ( but the system seems to be fully functional ). When I log out and log back in without rebooting everything works just fine. The error is 100% reproducible.

On the other hand - if I log into runlevel 3 first and then start the X manually, then there's no error.

    What could be the cause?

    Truly weird.

Let's see what repositories you have.

    zypper lr -d

You seem to have grabbed every repository which was not running away from you, huh? :)

I think that's the third or fourth time only today I say this: guys, please read about what repositories to use, otherwise tons of beta / alpha software will be jammed in your system, furthermore these repositories are contradicting. For starters, just keep oss, non-oss, update, Packman and the Ati-repositories (edit: Mozilla is okay too).

Btw: the "KDE4-Backports" channel is actually "KDE3-Backports".

Looks like you have mixed repositories.
    turn off all but

    1 17 19 21 22

Then do as root ie su -

    zypper dup

this should bring your system back to a base install.

You should avoid mixing repos that may supply conflicting packages such as the base system AND KDE 4.4 stuff If you want to play with betas disable the base stuff.

9 changes out of 10 that is the root of your problem

What do you mean by "base install"? Will it delete packages I've already installed? Or destroy my configuration?

No just move the system stuff back to the original install versions. Actually Since KDE in the base as changed from 4.3.1 to 4.3.5 I guess that will be where you will be It should not remove any installed packages but may down grade some. The problem is you have borked the system by mixing different version repositories. The only way to fix it is to go to a stable point.

Also I notice you have compiz. Do you have gnome installed? You should not use compiz with KDE the eye candy is now done in kwin.

My recommendation is the same as gogalthorp and others, which is you should restore your repositories back to only having enabled OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman, and then try rolling back KDE.

So first go to YaST > Software > Repositories and change your repositories to ONLY OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman.

Then go to YaST > Software > Software Management and select the repository "UPDATE". And then select "switch system packages" to the Update. ... You may fail in that because its possible there will be too many dependency problems.

This pix shows what I am stating (except I have some innocuous extra repositories added):

... this is a classic case of do as I say and not as I do ... ie ONLY OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman. Maybe after we sort the problem we can discuss the risk and impact of adding others.

I am a bit shocked here. You were our role model... :D

Compiz runs well with KDE, why should it not? As long as only either of the two Composite managers is switched on, there is no problem at all. Also beside wobbly windows or the cube you can not really compare the KDE-Effects to Compiz. Compiz is not only effects and bling, plus it offers a wider and different variety of effects.

Within this topic this is totally irrelevant, of course, but for some reason I feel the need to clarify that KDE effects != Compiz. If you have the time someday, take a look →here (no, I am not a Compiz fanboy, I use KDE).

Well it does run if you do it right. And yes some of the bling is different. But it also can introduce problems and kwin works great here with more eye candy then I can stand.
