Thread: KDE Kiosk in Public Environment?

Default KDE Kiosk in Public Environment?

    Hi everyone,
I am using OPENSuse (11.2 with KDE) at home since quite a while. Now i wanted to go a step further ...
Our local library computers are very slow running XP ... it takes almost a minute to open firefox only ...
So since the office got new computers, i was thinking about deploying one there as "server". The other four could connect at login to this machine and use its resources instead.
BUT: All that should run in a kiosk-like mode. In my research I found the kiosktool which apparently doesn't work on KDE 4.3 and 4.4.
SO: Do you think it is OK to use KDE 4.2 instead (i read that it should work then)? How secure would that be?
Or my preferred way: Is there an alternative to the kiosktool? As far as it works, it looks very good but unfortunately the settings don't save and apply ...

    Thanks for ideas ...
    Matthieu from Germany

Do not know the kiosk tool, but this also sounds a little bit as if it is
also an application field for the linux terminal server

    http://en.opensuse.org/LTSP

Do you consider that too or is it completely wrong for you.

Does the kiosktool from the OBS not work your you?

    http://software.opensuse.org/ymp/ope.../kiosktool.ymp

It is especially made for kde >=4.3.1

You do not even need OBS it is in the standard 11.2 oss repository.

I am an active member of another OpenSource Community. I thought it would be better to ask here than in a localized forum because i think the "real" experts sit here rather than in a smaller one ...
The KioskTool doesn't save/apply anything one did since the newer KDE versions. I didn't test it on anything older than OS11.2, but according to a text i read days ago, it worked with KDE 4.2. But i cannot test that ...
Someone stated, that the concept would be replaced by KAuth in 4.4 ... but that doesn't make any sense to me?
LTSP is an idea, but i would like the machines to run on their own, if the server is offline. Should be better in public places i think.
I would connect the machines on startup using XDMCP so they use the resources of the server. The old machines are too slow as i described above. It would also decrease the amount of maintanence needed from 4 to one machine.

    Thanks,
    Matthieu

i know a guy who maintains a kiosk setup for a children's "science
museum"...touch screen guided learning exhibits....i'm not sure if he
used KDE (i think he opted for something a LOT less resource
demanding)...and, i'm not sure his experience would be helpful...oh,
and i'm sure he is not using openSUSE....but, perhaps i could ask him
to drop in here and take a look at your questions...

otherwise, i have NO ideas on how to help..

fact is i don't even understand how using a new computer running
openSUSE/KDE as some kind of server (??) would help four over taxed
(and probably registry bound) XP machines run faster ?????

maybe if you explained your plan a little more . . .

Maybe I misunderstood one thing from the very beginning:

I assumed that you will also replace the win xp on the old machines with
linux. Is that correct or was this a wrong assumption?

It is right that i am going to replace the OS on the clients. If Gnome is offering the same connect-feature as KDE i will take a look into it. KDE offers a small button on the login-screen at the bottom which says "connect to a remote machine" which i want to use.
Are there good-looking alternatives for KDE except Gnome?
A fast machine as i am using it at home is definitely faster. I connected 3 machines at home for testing and could run OpenOffice and Firefox very smoothly. And then i could finally get some larger screens 'cause the 1024-resolution is hard for average eyes on those old screens ...

    Thanks,
    Matthieu
