Thread: Problem syncing Palm with Kontact (o/s 11.2, Kpilot)

Default Problem syncing Palm with Kontact (o/s 11.2, Kpilot)

I'm probably the last person to be using a Palm, but perhaps one of you who remembers the 'old days' can help me out:

Sync'ing between my Palm (actually a Sony Clie) and Kontact using KPilot (the KDE 3 version) used to work fine under openSUSE 11.1, but after upgrading to openSUSE 11.2 recently, I now get either of the following two scenarios:

    (a) If KPilot is started already and I try to sync, no connection is made and KPilot doesn't recognize my device.
    (b) If I start the Hotsync first and then open KPilot, I get the error message:
    Code:
Pilot device /dev/ttyUSB0 is not read-write.
I can work around the problem of the second scenario by making /dev/ttyUSB0 read-write using chmod 666 /dev/ttyUSB0, but this only works for one sync, hence is a very cumbersome solution ...

There've been naturally quite a few posts on the net regarding KPilot, Palm etc, but nothing that has helped me fix this issue.

Cool Re: Problem syncing Palm with Kontact (o/s 11.2, Kpilot)

I have the same problem. I'm using kpilot (KDE3) version on openSUSE 11.2 and it runs fine. I can do hot sync as root, but not as a regular user. Did you find any solutions for this?

I have tried chmod 666 /dev/ttyUSB1 with no luck.

    all I get is

Pilot device /dev/ttyUSB1 is not read-write.

ANY BODY OUT THEREWITH A SOLUTION???? HELLO!!!

nah, i'm unfortunately stuck as well. plus the fact that support for kpilot has been dropped from kde 4.4, so nothing is running on my system. with the switch to akonadi, i'm not able to use kde3-kpilot any longer ...

    0) make sure no other app ties up the ports:
    ps ax|grep [p]ilot
    kill everything in the list.

    1) add yourself to the group "dialout"
    (Yast->User and Group Management: edit/details)
There is no /dev/ttyUSB* unless the gadget is connected to the cable and initiating sync operation, so there is no sense of doing chmod on it. see (3) below.

    2) run as root:
    tail -f /var/log/messages

Connect Clie (or Palm) to USB, turn it on, initiate hostsync operation. watch your root terminal for something like this:

"Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB1"

    # ls -l /dev/ttyUSB1
    crw-rw-r-- 1 root dialout 188, 1 2010-04-08 21:48 /dev/ttyUSB1
(that's why you need to belong to "dialout")

    3) Configure KPilot:
    General Setup -> Device:
    Pilot device: /dev/ttyUSB1
    Speed: 115200
    Workarounds: None
    Encoding: Unicode (UTF-8)
Pilot user: your gadget's user name

DO NOT touch Conduits checkboxes! If you do, the config window will freeze and you'll have to kill the /usr/bin/kpilot orphaned process.

    (4) Close Config window. Quit KPilot. If there is a kpilot-daemon tray icon, right-click and choose "quit". (the thing seems to read config only at startup).
Launch kpilot. double-click the tray icon to see kpilot's window.

(5)Connect the gadget and initiate hotsync from it.

Your stuff should go to: ~/.kde4/share/apps/kpilot/DBBackup/

(Worked for me with kde-4.3.5 and kpilot-4.3.5-0.1.4)

If you have several gadgets, it's better to set them up with different user names. You can put anything under "Pilot user" in KPilot Config. It'll offer to use device's user name during hotsync, - go for it.
    Then you'll get:
    ~/.kde4/share/apps/kpilot/DBBackup/user1/
    ~/.kde4/share/apps/kpilot/DBBackup/user2/
    and so on.

I use Kubuntu (or am just trying it) and have got it working using the following link:

HOWTO: Set up kpilot to synch your Palm PDA under Kubuntu - Ubuntu Forums

I don't know if it will help you or not.

I also hit problems in getting kontact to talk to akondadi, which I finally solved thanks to:

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...di/+bug/448705

Basically I think that Apparmor was interfering with akonadi starting up.

If you want more info then please let me know.

Hm, sometimes I marvel at the wonders the (electronic) world has in store for us... I had some time and gave KPilot another shot on openSUSE 11.2 / KDE 4.4.2, and now it works (more or less) perfect, at least as far as I can see right now. There's a slight quirk in that the program doesn't respond to my activating/deactivating sync items, but it syncs the ones fine it wants to sync. Pretty good for an application that isn't supported anymore. I publicly reconfirm my love for the penguin ...

homoludens1000, do you have kpilot for KDE 4 or you just use kpilot for kde3 under kde4?

I'm looking for an answer to this question. Maybe you have some experience.

    wrbbt,

I was actually using kde4 KPilot. Like I said, it was working fine.

Unfortunately I destroyed my Palm the other day by accident, so I'm afraid I can't really do any verifications or tests right now ... :-(

Thanks, homoludens. Sorry for the accident of your Palm.
But, where did you get kde4 kpilot? I can't see it in the repos.
If I search for kpilot the only answer I get is the one for kde3. In webpin, nothing.
