Installing fonts in Gnome desktop

opensuse v11.2

The Gnome help describes how to install fonts: copy the font files to </usr/share/fonts>. I have some Type1 fonts with PFB, PFM, AFM and sometimes INF face files. The only ones I see in the <Type1> directory are AFM and PFA.

Which font files does Gnome actually require? Is a PFA needed? Are the font files moved/deleted from </usr/share/fonts/> after installation?

Is there a more obvious way to install fonts in Gnome?

All I ever do is put the fonts in a folder and place the folder in
/usr/share/fonts

It does not matter what extensions there are? And can you remove the folders after installation?

  1. dunno
  2. just leave it there
