Thread: CD/DVD mount adds trailing blanks to mount point

Default CD/DVD mount adds trailing blanks to mount point

    Greetings All,

On SUSE 11.2 when a CD or DVD is automounted (in the /media directory) it appears that the mount point chosen for the disk always has extra blanks at the end of the mount.

For example, if the label on the CD was DISK-001, the mount point chosen by SUSE is

    /media/DISK-001\ \ \ \ \ /

In 11.1 (and earlier) the mount point would have been
    /media/DISK-001/

I'm assuming that the trailing blanks are filling in unused or blank chars at the end of the CD label.

Is there any way to change this annoying behavior? I much prefer NOT to have trailing blanks in the mount point.

    Thanx in advance.

You can do a manual mount.

This problem is discussed few times elsewhere in the forum. Please do a search and read.

The problem is that oS uses the vol label on the CD/DVD to create a directory under /media for mounting. Your CD/DVD contains non-printable characters in the vol label.

Actually the problem is that the mounter didn't trim the spaces from the end of the vol label. It used to in the past. So it's a new bug. I have old CDs that used to mount correctly and now the mountpoint in the /media directory has spaces at the end. Some developer has interpreted the ISO9660 specs too literally for this field. Sure, the 32 byte vol label field may contain spaces as it's not null terminated or anything like that (this is ISO, not Unix, remember), but I'm sure that 99.999% of the users don't care about trailing spaces.

I think it's also happening in other distros because the bug comes from upstream.

I would abruptly care a whole lot the instant it got in the way of a
    CLI cd .
