i heard a guy say once: "If mama ain't happy ain't no one happy!"

and i think that holds true here...that is, those commands i asked you
to report back on didn't come back the way i hoped--because they were
(as far as i can tell, perfect...no problem) but we know that Zypper
(which is the behind-the-scenes guts of YaST is not do as it should)
*and* to do what it should it MUST be able to talk to the distant repos..

    do'h! duh! etc...

yes, fix the network problem...and, hope the zypper/yast problem
    suddenly goes away!! sigh.

i can't help with that except to say there is a setup guide somewhere
on the wiki and/or in the networking forum...

but, let me make a suggestion: hang here for a while as see if one of
the networking gurus drops into this thread again.....(i think ken_yap
and some others can fix this while asleep!)

hmmmm...it is probably to go over to
http://forums.opensuse.org/network-internet/ and try to catch the eye
of a networking pro with a subject line including something like
"Unknown network status" and/or "bridge br0"

you might look as some of the documentation and see it is just a
matter of unplugging this problem machine from the bridge and instead
plug it into a router, and restart networking services and
presto--HOWEVER i don't know much about networking (except i select
    DCHP and mine 'just works')..

    good luck

Replace download.opensuse.org with it's IP address of 195.135.221.130. You should be able to connect and download the updates. I had the same problem, another post some months ago mentioned this as a solution.

Sounds like a good idea - it could be DNS issue.

Where do I change this? I don't think Yast has an option to edit repo ip addresses.

On the other hand, since another machine on the same network doesn't have these issues, DNS error must be stored in some kind of dns cache on OpenSuse. Is there such thing in the first place? How to refresh that cache?

Well, I'll be d*mned. It worked!

It also explains why packman worked fine before.

What I can't explain is how DNS error creeped into zypper/yast, but that doesn't really matter now, does it?

I've updated, refreshed, added and deleted a bunch of repos, not a single glitch.

Cheers, everybody. Palladium for your time and Binary66 for giving a fresh look to a stalemate problem.
