Question General App Question - New to Suse

    Hi all,

I'm new to OpenSuse, I had used Ubuntu for some time (about a year off/on, dual boot with win7) but I wanted to try something else which worked a little better with KDE and ran across Suse. I installed Suse 11.2 with KDE, so far so good, I do have some questions though which should be easy to answer:

    - What should I use to install apps with? Ubuntu was fairly simple but I had always used Gnome so KDE interface is new to me, saw references to RPM, Yum, Apt, etc, is there an app already installed like Ubuntu has (add/remove software) which I can start up and search for programs like VLC to install?

    - On boot up I'm getting an error "Undefined video mode 345", press space to continue which I do and it starts up OK. How do I resolve this issue?

That's it for now, thank you for your help!

    Hash: SHA1

Use YaST -> Software Managment from X or use zypper from a terminal,
zypper works like apt, but better for me

Video mode refers to the video settings for the terminals

VESA BIOS Extensions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

might be be of some help.

You can set at boot or in the menu.lst commands add vga=0xXXX to the kernel = line where XXX is the video mode you want.

So the table for the Kernel mode numbers in HEX are:
    57 colors | 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024
    58 ----+-------------------------------------
    59 256 | 0x301 0x303 0x305 0x307
    60 32k | 0x310 0x313 0x316 0x319
    61 64k | 0x311 0x314 0x317 0x31A

Perfect, thanks! I think this OpenSuse is looking up! I might have to install this on several machines and see how it goes. Kinda got used to Ubuntu's way but I don't think it'll be hard to make the full jump over. Suse's KDE sure looks pretty and seems to "just work" which is what I love about linux.

Windows does a great job of this too but they require a lot of fast hardware, linux gets it done with less IMO.
