Thread: Firefox Crash

  1. #1

    Unhappy Firefox Crash

Firefox keeps crashing when I try to play video. It used to crash when I used old version 3.0 and it still crashes now in the 3.5 version.

It doesn't seem to have been a hard drive problem..I have enough space and memory.

With regard to addons, I have java and shockwave flash...and an addon for weather....though i have noticed it used to crash before I had installed any of those..

    How can I solve this??

    Process of elimination.
Test FF without any addons. Easy way to test is: Close FF and to rename .mozilla to .mozilla-old
    Start FF again
    test playing video

I did the rename. Video test fails.
The rename resulted in wiping out all my bookmarks! How do I get them back?? I tried to rename it back but I can only find .mozilla and not .mozilla-old

IF you renamed the original it must be there. Maybe you removed the period at the beginning and it's lower down the list.?

Is the crash happening only when you play videos? What video? url?

The crash happens on any video on any website... but for now I am testing it on Youtube. Its like my FF is unstabilized by the video...

Open FF from a terminal with this command:

    firefox

keep the terminal open and use FF, when it crashes - copy all the text from the terminal here:

okay... so i finally found the .mozilla-old file ..i dont know why i couldn't place it before...but anyway i changed it back to .mozilla, correctly with the periods, but unfortunately my bookmarks are not back.

i tried the terminal command firefox..and it opened the old firefox. but when i try to play the video on youtube..the area where the video comes turns grey or just remains black and the browser basically freezes out.. so i have to, as linux says, "kill it".. anyway here is the text in between...hope it says something..

    e@linux-xvsw:~> firefox
*** nss-shared-helper: Shared database disabled (set NSS_USE_SHARED_DB to enable).

    /usr/bin/firefox: line 126: 4327 Killed $MOZ_PROGRAM "$@"

so...i tried this several times..once the video did play..but actually the video concerned was one of those that just had lyrics coming in like a slideshow and the particular song..so to say, it didn't actually have a "video" per se. so i clicked on another video which apparently did have a "video" and then FF finally crashed. anyway, i copied the text for this too..and i guess the last line specifically is different saying "Segmentation fault" rather than me killing it. Here is the text..

    Hi
You just need to restore via the 'Manage Bookmarks' and browse into the
    directory eg
    Code:
    ~/.mozilla/firefox/<blah>.default/bookmarkbackups/
and import the latest bookmarks-yyyy-mm-dd.json file.

I tried the bookmark suggestion via Organize Bookmarks but the json file is not visible there. I even right clicked and selected -show hidden files- but no change. However when I enter the BookmarkBackups folder in my File Manager - I can see several json files in there! So I tried to right click on those and use Open With FF but that didn't work.
