Screen has desktop but no icons or taskbar

Hello everyone,

I am running openSUSE 11.2 GNOME on a Toshiba P3 laptop. Lately after logging in all I see is a green desktop without any icons or even the taskbar at the bottom. I have to reboot and choose the fail-safe boot option, logout then log back in. This is a very annoying and recurring problem.

Could you show me how to fix it? Thanks.

:frowning:

What videocard does your laptop have? Do you use compiz?

Hi
It’s a bug in metacity;

Hi,

No, I don’t use compiz as far as I know, but will check.

My laptop has an old Trident Cyberblade XP video card.

Ok. I saw metacity as one of the installed software. Should I remove it for the time being until the next fix is released?

Yes I saw compiz as one of the installed packages but just wondering if it’s indeed the"culprit" but not “metacity”.

Hi
No, you need to download it and update your existing one. What are you
using 32 or 64bit? Or post the output from the command;

uname -a

Hi malcolmlewis,

Here’s the output of uname -a:

uname -a
Linux linux-yhaa 2.6.31.8-0.1-default #1 SMP 2009-12-15 23:55:40 +0100 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Sorry I don’t quite understand what you meant by “download it and update your existing one”. Are you referring to two different or the same metacity packages? What should I download?

Hi
Grab this one;
http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.2-test/rpm/i586/metacity-2.28.0-2.6.1.i586.rpm

Then log in to a console session via ctrl+alt+F1 and login as your
user, then cd to the location of the downloaded file, then;

sudo rpm -Uhv metacity-2.28.0-2.6.1.i586.rpm
exit

Then press ctrl+alt+F7 and then press ctl+alt+backspace but press the
backspace key twice to restart the X server.

Hello again malcolmlewis,

Thanks for your help. Your advice works! I should point out that after typing in thes udo command to install the new metacity package I got an on-screen lecture about respecting others, etc… I could have typed su, entered root password then rpm, etc.

Hi
Your welcome, glad it’s sorted. Yes, but use su - not just su to ensure
you have roots environment.
