Thread: Running multiple VMs for learning administration

Default Running multiple VMs for learning administration

I'm currently going through, what is essentially a Linux+ course. I don't like any of the exercises in the book, as it's outdated and doesn't really thoroughly teach how to implement a lot of stuff.

Is there a program or suite of programs out there where I can create a few VM's with their own IP's, users, files systems, etc. so I can setup up Samba, NFS, NIS, etc.?

if you have the memory you can run a lot of VMs...i don't know how
    many in free versions...

free VirtualBox is all i need....and, it is drop dead easy..

How about the Live CD, KDE or GNOME. Burn it to a CD or install on thumbdrive, then boot (may need to check BIOS to enable BOOT order).

With some work, there's QEMU, kvm/libvirt, from oneclick.

i knew you needed vms for the mcitp classes

didn't know you needed them for linux +, I ought to get that linux + cert

    good luck with your vms
Id hate to think of paying too much for a vm

Sun's VirtualBox is a free download. There is a paid version with a couple of extra bells and whistles.

With virtual box i literally need to install other os's on real partitions? I downloaded **** small linux to use as the virtual machines so my PC doesn't get bogged down to quickly....

Virtualbox simulates a disk for the guest OS using a file on the host OS.

D@mn Small Linux gets bleeped out? That's great. I guess they don't want to see competitors getting free space here.

    yeah lol

this thing is amazing... I got a few DSL VM's up and running. I created a disk for tiny XP as well and am installing it now. I'm getting the impression that this would be the way to go for running Windows apps instead of Wine... is there are a huge performance trade off?
