Thread: Moving application icons in Kickoff Application Launcher

Default Moving application icons in Kickoff Application Launcher

    Hello,

Sorry for the simple question, but I have spent about an hour trying to find the answer in the forum.

I've downloaded VideoLan (VLC) via Yast but the icon was placed in the audio folder. How do I move it to the video player folder?

Also, where are additional icons stored?

I run SuSE 11.2 (boxed version) with KDE.

    Many thanks

    Mark

I can't quite figure out what you want to do

VLC should be installed via yast from Packman repo!

Other icons? For what, kde are
    /usr/share/icons

Categories (icon folders) for VLC described in /usr/share/applications/vlc.desktop.
    Change to AudioVideo;Player;AudioVideo;Video;

I run Suse 11.2 (boxed version). It does not come with VLC. I used VLC's instructions to download the binary file. See VLC media player for openSUSE.

I added a VLC repository as instructed. I then started Yast, searched for vlc, and selected vlc for installation. After installation, I looked for the programme launch icon. The programme icon to start vlc was not located in the video player folder within the application launcher (Windows would call it 'start') area. I found it in the audio folder within the launcher.

The question is how do I move the VLC programme icon from the launcher/application/multimedia/audio folder to the launcher/application/multimeda/video folder?

I am sorry, but I do not understand what you mean when you say VLC should be installed via yast from Packman repo.

As for additional icons, when I try to change an icon and select 'other icons' I am no longer presented with a screen of icons, just a blank folder. Somehow the pointer to the directory which contains additional icons is lost. There is a 'browse' button but I've not been able to locate the 'other icons' folder(s).

    Many thanks,

    Mark

    Thanks Caf,

I did the painstaking installation of the multimedia via packman, following to the T the instructions therein set out. And this was done on a fresh installation of 11.2 (boxed). VLC etc seem to work.

I must say at times you are rather like a dentist: painful but a welcome relief.

The installation, however, left 2 loose ends:

    (1) although the VLC icon is now in the video player folder (apps/multimedia/video player), the other additional video players installed by packman reside in the audio player folder.

    (2) when I load a DVD the options which Suse presents do not include VLC or any of the 4 other video players which are now installed.

    So, Questions:

    (1) How do I move the icons from the audio to the video folder;
    (2) How do I have VLC etc set as options to select when I run a DVD?

Any help will be appreciated. Sorry for the bother. But I have looked lots but can't find the answer.

    Regards,
    Mark

    1. Use the menu editor. Right click the start/menu
    2. see the system settings - advanced - file associations

"see the system settings - advanced - file associations"

Ah, slight miscommunication on my part, but your suggestion got me there - "device actions" rather than "file associations". So, simply added an action in DeviceActions, typed "Play DVD with VLC" as the description of the action and added the command "vlc --dvd %f" after examining the other apps' settings in DeviceActions. Have no idea what "--dvd %f" actually means, but everything seems to work. No smoke nor fire.

After adding the new action, needed to restart the system and bob's your uncle - it worked.

Many thanks for your patience, and guidance.

Default Segmentation fault - was Re: Moving application icons in Kickoff Application Launcher

I've installed VLC via the packman repo (see above) but the system will no longer properly shut down. Immediately after the kill signal, there is an exception error reported as an unspecified segmentation fault. The system then stalls, requiring a power shut down.

I am not yet familiar enough with error message locations in Suse 11.2. However, short of reinstalling without adding on the packman programmes, anyone have a suggestion to trace this fault and better yet to resolve the problem?

    Many thanks,

This behaviour was reported elsewhere and a fix is on its way - it is Kernel-related, though, and has nothing to do with Packman.
