Webkam not working

:(I’ve gotten everything working on my laptop except the webcam. I’m trying to use webkam (from kde repo) but the launcher starts up but the program doesn’t start. The driver is “uvcvideo” which loads with no error messages.

I’m stumped. Does webkam require a printer?

Thanks for any advise.

Try this program: cheese

su
zypper install cheese

Certain webcams are bound not to work under linux.
My personal suggestion is to just sell off your current webcam and trade it up for a logitech webcam as most logitech webcams have decent support in linux.

Well, the webcam is built into the laptop and I’m not about to sell it.

Tried Syampillais’ suggestion, d/l cheese, and it works just fine. Great resolution (1600x1200).

So why does kdes’ webkam require a printer be set up under cups?

Thanks for the replies.

I thing the printer related messages are not related to this. Are you getting it every time you run it?

I too can’t use the webkam, it is complaining about some missing file when I run it. I think it is written in Ruby.

I think webkam doesn’t really work in openSUSE, and I have not seen a post regarding this application in this forum. I tried it in openSUSE 11.1 and 11.2 and every time I try it, just throws this message

./webkam_app.rb:2:in `require': no such file to load -- gst (LoadError)
	from ./webkam_app.rb:2
	from main.rb:1:in `require'
	from main.rb:1

I too get the same message. I think the packager missed something.

Anyone make any progress on this? I get the same error too, and would rather not have to use a gnome application.

The webcam in question in this thread was a 0c45:6406,

  Model: "Microdia Laptop_Integrated_Webcam_2M"
  Hotplug: USB
  Vendor: usb 0x0c45 "Microdia"
  Device: usb 0x6406 "Laptop_Integrated_Webcam_2M"

and it is NOT listed in the uvc driver page Linux UVC driver & tools as being linux compatible.
