Thread: Where's The dvd icon?

    Default Where's The dvd icon?

Hi. Having no solution to my previous post concerning a lack of dvd options with 11.2, i'll ask a fresh question....

I went back from 11.2 Kde4.2 to 11.1 because whenever i placed my Samsung printer driver disk in the drive, the only option i get is to burn a disk with K3b. There is no disk folder in the root directory for me to access, and there is no disk icon on the desktop.

With 11.1 Kde 3.5, Kde 4.1 & Kde 4.2 i have a disk folder in the root directory, a disk icon, and the option to open the disk from the last plugged in device.

The only way i can install my printer driver in 11.2 was to manually copy the disk contents with 11.1 (when it was installed), and after installing 11.2, copied it across to the home folder where i could use the CLI to navigate and install with ./install.sh

These past few days i've installed both 32 and 64 bit versions of 11.1 and 11.2 (now using 11.2 64bit).

So, is this a problem inherent with 11.2. Do others have the same problem? If not then how can i have the dvd show up in the root folder and/or an icon placed on the desktop so i can open it.

    Regards

The DVD should show in Dolphin if you have 'Places' enabled

There should be an icon on the panel with a device manager popping up and offering you options on what to do with the device or medium in it.

But I don't understand what you're doing. Installing drivers from a CD? Did not know Samsung ships printers with linux drivers on CD...Sure this has worked?

Did you try the autodetection of the printer from Yast? Was the printer on during install?

Quite odd, did you try a logout/reboot?
I had issues with drive detection in KDE4 in the past especially in opensuse 11.1 but after reboot it worked.
11.2 seems much better at it, but different hardware, different computers, different issues.

Yes i have Places enabled and the only option from the pop up panel is 'copy with K3b' (not burn with Krb).

I have a Samsung Laser Printer 2240 and i have used the disk before with Mandriva, Ubuntu and Opensuse 11.1. It's only with 11.2 that i'm having problems with. By not using the disk i don't get as many options such as ink level.

Prior to going back to 11.1, i used the auto-detection successfully, but i have wysiwyg font problems - printout font size is the same irrespective of what is send to it.

Regardless of the options offered, you should still see the DVD or CD show in places.
Just what are you wanting it to do?

What i'd like is for the dvd to show up on desktop, places, and in the root folder as it does in 11.1 and other distro's.

I haven't tried using Gnome in opensuse so i can't say if it works with that, but for sure it works (on my system) in 11.1 with various Kde's but not in 11.2, and i'd like to know if it's a particular problem with the 11.2 Kernal and my system, or if others have experianced the same problem.

There is no problem, it's the way it is.

There is a new feature in my kde4.4 settings which allow auto mount of removable devices. But as it is there is no difference between clicking an icon on the desktop or in places.

You can add other options to the context menu that pops up, so you have more than k3b, but what option would you want in there?

I checked the context menu ( i believe you provided me with the information on how to do this in an earlier post), and all options are enabled, it's just that when this driver disk is inserted, there is no other option presented (apart from copy with K3b) that allows for me to open the disk for manual installation.

Only by installing 11.1 could i access the disk. It just seems odd that i cannot with 11.2.

    Thanks for the inputs

three times you reference the "root directory" and it not having a DVD
    icon show..

are you (maybe) logging into KDE4.2 as root?
