Thread: "Duplicate" Icons on new 11.2 installation.

  1. #1

Default "Duplicate" Icons on new 11.2 installation.

Just installed 11.2 x86_64 from Linux Format magazine DVD and updated.
I note that I have both Waste Bin and Trash icons on the desktop. Also an Open Office icon and a ? icon which also is for Open Office.
What is going on? Which icon is correct one and can I/should I delete the unwanted icon?

I'm guessing that the extra icons are the ones from your old
    /home/<username>/Desktop/.

If this is the case and you also have the hidden files/directories from
your previous openSUSE install you should get rid of them (move or
rename them) or they may, cause problems.

The other possibility is if you have logged in to GNOME and KDE with
this user, both may have created shortcuts.

In any case, these shortcuts, are just that, and it's not difficult to
add them; therefore it's not dangerous to delete the unwanted ones.

    Hi Barry,
Thanks for the reply. Just let me confirm how to tell which is just a shadow icon and which the working one. Right clicking gives me a properties tab on the ones to keep, is that correct? If so then I shall need help in getting the Open Office logo installed in place of the ?

Drag from the menu is the easiest way.

If you click one and it works it should be safe to keep that one.

If you drag a replacement from the menu, as was suggested, they will
    have the correct icons.

But you can add/change the icons by right clicking, going to properties
and clicking on the icon button at the top left.

i would be interested to learn where these duplicated icons came from!

did you (as another poster suggested) install 11.2 over an existing
instance of Linux and keep your /home/[you]/Desktop directory?

if so, was that a previous openSUSE? if so, which? and did you go from
(say) KDE3 to KDE4, or KDE3 to Gnome, or what?

hmmmmm...i think "Waste Bin" is UK for the (proper nomenclature as
used in the USA) "Trash"...so, maybe you installed both UK and (real)
English ;-) *or* you had one in the previous instance and this
    time chose the other??

    Hi All,
Well yes I did install over 11.1 and kept home directories which are on different partition. I am still learning and playing catch up with KDE4 etc. My other systems are OS/2 MCP2 and eCS.

Sorted my desktop problem using Properties Tab which is similar approach to OS/2, just didn't know how to bring up selection of icons from which to choose.

If there are other issues I shall post new thread, meanwhile thanks for the help.

hint: you are gonna like it here when you learn enough to make 'easy'
    (i jumped from Win3.1 to Warp 3 in '95....was on 3/4/eCS exclusive
until about 2002 when i completed my move to Linux exclusively..

    so, patience..
