My laptop will not boot from the DVD in rescue mode. I get the three dots, and then my caps lock light starts to flash, and nothing happens.

I read the other link and have booted onto the Live DVD. I followed all the steps successful until the last one:
But mount fails with No such file or directory. both /proc and /sys seem to be empty. I just did a reinstall of 13.2, so they should be there.

    chroot /mnt
    mount /proc
    mount /sys

    mount /dev/XXX /mnt
    mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
    mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
    mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
    chroot /mnt

Where XXX is the / for the system you wish to chroot into.

Those extra steps made the disk mount properly, and I could run Yast2. But it fails to write the boot record. "An error occurred during boot loader installation". I am trying Grub2, and custom configuration to the root of the main drive (sda), and I checked both boxes (set active flag and write generic code to mbr).

I have spent all day on this using many tools (Linux boot repair, parted magic, rescatux), none of which worked.

This is an old guide based on legacy grub not grub2

In some situations and where a user is struggling, I have found it's sometimes simpler for them if they can create a small partition or use an existing one and do a new installation of another distro such as Ubuntu. Once done, it should get you to your openSUSE install. From there, then, all that is required as su - is:

    Code:
    grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
    then
    Code:
    grub2-install /dev/sda
    Leap 15.1_KDE
