    Default Freezing Issue 11.2 KDE

I burned a live cd for openSuse 11.2 KDE. I tried it live, thought it was amazing so i installed. Everything seems installed correctly so far (i did automatic partitioning), but my computer keeps freezing and wont unfreeze. I am thinking it is because of a lack of ram, but maybe it's something else. I am waiting for 2GB's of ram to show up in the mail any day to add to my 512Mb. I was running Mint xfce before and it was fine. but since i am getting more memory i thought i would try 11.2 kde.

    PC Specs:
    Dell Dimension 9150
    Pentium 4 processor.
    512mb ram
    160 gb hard drive

I turned the computer off and i am thinking of leaving it off until i get the new ram installed.

Any thoughts? I am really anxious to get started of learning openSuse; I was hoping I didn't have to wait for the mail man.

    Any ideas are apprciated.

well! you said "i am thinking of leaving it off until i
get the new ram installed." so i didn't figure you would be back here
    until you could say:

    1. i installed the new RAM and everything is wonderful!
    or
    2. i installed the RAM and it still freezes..

when you say it freezes, what (exactly) do you mean?
does it, for example stop working and nothing moves, the cap and num
lock lights on the keyboard flash but nothing else works and nothing
happens when i push Ctrl+Alt+F1, or what?

what about if you turn off desktop effects....does it still freeze?

what graphics do you have? have you installed the open source driver,
    or what?

by the way, it was less than an hour between your posts...do you think
there are paid service technicians waiting for your help plea?

@Palladium, i know my posts weren't very far apart, and the reason for the second one was because after reading my first post I felt that I didn't really ask a question or invite ideas. I don't think anyone is waiting on my becon call.

I am glad for having the opportunity to use openSuse.

As far as the freezing, i didn't see the caplock blinking. It would browse the internet for a while, but when i tried messing with compiz and/or Yast it would freeze and i would give it time but it wouldn't unfreeze; I had to push the power button on the tower to shutoff. I felt maybe to much was going on for the ram to handle. I tried ctl-alt-delete, but maybe that doesn't work for linux; only windows. I see that you wrote ctrl-alt-f1. I am assuming that works similarly. Hopefully my ram will get here soon. I probably could find a way to use openSuse as xfce until i get the ram installed, but i think i will just wait. Hopefully that solves that part of it. I will keep you posted. Thanks for your help.

    Code:
    /sbin/lspci -nnk
then we can see your hardware.

AFAICS the instability started when you started experimenting with compiz (why on KDE4?). So I guess your videocard cannot do compositing (without driver install or just because of hardware incapability).

Since you just started, reinstall, create a new clean /home and start using openSUSE with the defaults first. That way you will learn how things work first. If you create trouble by then you will at least know what's happening or where to look.

appreciate the responses. I am still waiting for the ram. I am almost done with the fresh install. Maybe it wasn't compiz, but i was trying out the cube and some other featuress like that.

Is there anything i should install as far as drivers or aps after install of opensuse; for basic funcionality?

DBus error : Unable to get transaction id from packagekit.

I recieved this error while browsing with Firefox. Firefox seems to be loading a little slow during browsing.

I did the update after install when i was prompt, 18 items. and the app install seemed to go well.

I am keeping it basic at this time and things are working nicely, but i am guessing i will need some drivers before i try to do things like wobbly windows, cube rotation, etc.
