Thread: OPENSUSE 11.2 packaging

    Angry OPENSUSE 11.2 packaging

    Hi!

I am using OpenSUSE 11.2 32 bit for my acer laptop 2420 and 64 bit for my Del Studio 17-in Laptop and Pentium extreme Quad core PC. I found that it could detect most devices in all the machines which is the positive side.

The negative side is that I found our old entries are missing which is highly disappointing. I could not find gnuplot (which is daily bread and butter), xmgrace, xv etc. We use linux in scientific community as it understands our requirements. It is difficult to digest all the reasons for excluding those entries. All the interest was given either to games or to web/server/IT prog development. Lot of people from scientific community enhanced LINUX to bring it to present shape and there should not be any reason to remove programs of their needs. Disgusiting.

    Wrong sub-forum.

Also gnuplot is included with the distribution as is xmgrace, xv etc. - ( They are all located in the OSS repository )

It sounds as if you have an issue with your repository setup - perhaps you have oss disabled?

Thanks for the reply. I installed from DVD. OSS repository comes into play if I download from Internet which I don't want now. I want to install everything from DVD only. By the by, OSS and other repositories are enabled - I checked.

Well it's most likely because they simply can't fit everything on the DVD - gnuplot etc. are clearly included in the OSS repository.

You could make a mirror of the oss repo on a local server and install all files from there - that's the best solution I can give you. The overall download for the entire repo + update is about 15GB (I make it myself everytime the distribution gets released).

    not so fast scienceguy:

you didn't look very hard huh?

did you try searching in YaST for any of those?
or just type into a terminal (for example)

    zypper in gnuplot+xmgrace+xv

i don't have 11.2 here to check, but i'd be *astounded* if those
programs and THOUSANDS of others are not just an install away..

i can go to http://software.opensuse.org/search and search for
gnuplot, xmgrace, and xv and find that ALL of those are readily
available for a one click install via the net..

the only thing disgusting here is your (apparent) desire that the
things YOU need are automatically installed for everyone, every time..

Thanks - I shall check again.

I suggest you to check 11.2 first. Those packages I need can be installed automatically if you choose to install everything ZZZ which is not the default case. My desire is not to install everything automatically. My desire is that all those packages must be in DVD so that if required I can install them.

The disgusting thing is that without understanding my statement, you commented.

Thanks for being a dick, I'll be sure never to suggest anything to you so it won't be "disgusting".

still, you think the openSUSE world should revolve around YOUR needs
    and wants!

HELLO! the DVD can't possibly be big enough to fit every person's
wants and need...just about everyone has to use the repos eventually..
that you don't want to just now, is not my problem...it is YOURS!

    so, unDisgust yourself..
