opensuse 11.2 crashes while running firefox and konqueror

Firefox crashed, could not close it/do anything on it, the mouse pointer was still able to move and the wireless buton was working. I disabled the wireless network and it got disabled, but still firefox was unresponsive… while doing this, I tried alt+esc, ctrl+alt+esc, ctrl+alt+backspace none of them worked! This has happened to me some times now! I have to force shutdown with cutting off the power supply, any alternatives how to handle such situation? and why is it happening?

And since I have forced shutdown the computer with disconnecting the power supply 4-5 times, do I need to run some check or something for verifying its integrity or something?

the same sort crash has taken place while using konqueror for surfing web

I am using Firefox 3.5.6
using shockwave flash 10.0 r32 and shockwave flash 9.0 r999 is disabled

I am a newbie, but really want to use opensuse 11.2, any help will be really appreciated. Kindly give the instructions in the simplest step by step form, I am new to linux:P

This is what I could copy from the logs

If I may be so bold as to pass a recommendation, … next time you post for help do not post MASSIVE list of error messages.

If you think those error messages are relevant, put them on a web site such as pastebin - Type, paste, share. and post here the URL. But do not clutter the thread with such a massive post.

That is likely to scare people away, as opposed to getting the help you want. … Thats just my experience based on 4 years as a moderator, and 7 years in the forums.

My experience is multiple plugins tend to cause firefox to crash. Its better IMHO to minimize the number of plugins. I typically get by with flash-player and mplayerplug-in and no other plugins.

Also, the extensions and add-ons you have put in firefox are relevant, and conflcits in those can cause a crash.

Hi,

Firstly, I am in no way an expert, but the experts would need to know some information first. You say you’re using openSUSE 11.2, are you using 32 bit or 64 bit? Which desktop environment are you using (kde, gnome, xfce)?

Could you please open a terminal and copy and paste the output of:

zypper lr -d

And finally does this just randomly happen or does it happen when you’re doing something specific like watching flash videos?

EDIT: I see oldcpu came in and gave some suggestions, I would follow those!

Take Care,

Ian

To quit crashed applications:

  • right-click on desktop
  • select “Run Command”
  • press second button on the left (“Show System Activity”)
  • select “firefox” (or whichever crashed application) and click on “Kill Process” at the top

You said you hit ctrl-alt-backspace - you know in SUSE you have to hit backspace twice, I presume. I actually think it’s quite clever.

@oldcpu: thank you, didn’t come across my mind when I initially posted, but very true:P will definitely keep that in mind next time, pastebin looks useful:P
about the addons: I know I have made a mess with multimedia plugins, its actually confusing, since the mplayer ones have like the same description for: windows media player plugin, quicktime plugin, right now I have disabled all the multimedia ones, except flash 10 and mplayerplug-in 3.55, wll post how it goes on…

@ijbreakey: thank you:), using opensuse 11.2, 32 bit edition with kde interface
output of zypper lr -d pastebin - Mine - post number 1723427
I tried to observe a pattern, but its sort of random, nothing specific, but did freeze 3 times after waking from “suspend to ram”… it didn’t actually freeze when I am watching any flash videos, but sometime after it, it does… the occurence of freeze is occasional

@Tokugawa-Ieyasu: when the firefox freezes, I can only move the mouse poiter over firefox window and the wireless button works too, except that everythig on screen is unresponsive, including the right click… also tried to use the shortcut for what u suggested, ctrl+esc, the window doesn’t show up, when it freezes…

@Confuseling: I will try the two times backspace thing with ctrl+alt+backspace, but I think while trying to quit i actually pressed it many times, still… i really hope that magic sysrq thingie works, since I don’t want my file system go corrupted, thanks for the enlightening article:)

Since I have hard shutdown quite a few times because of frozen firefox n konqueror, I tried to repair my filesystem with opensuse 11.2 boot cd, but while repairing it keeps on prompting ,“Error”, n gives the option: skip or repair and after pressing repair again the dialog occurs saying “error” and again giving the two options skip or repair,it kept repeating, pressed repair like 20 times, still it again comes up! when i pressed skip, it will skip that filesytem n starts checking the other one! is there any other way to repair the filesytem, I am using ext 4? or any soultion for this one?

thank you all!

siddharth41089, I note some aspects to your software management that could cause you problems …

Entry-6 on KDE. IMHO this is risky to keep. I would disable this, and only enable it when there is a specific application you want, and then after installing that application, disable the app.

Entry-5 on Videolan. This WILL cause you problems. Videolan packages will put codecs where Packman packages can not find them, and hence sound will stop working with Packman packages (and visa versa). IMHO you should remove Videolan repository (or at least disable it) and then change ALL packages that you installed from Videolan to packages installed from Packman.

Entry 2 and Entry 6. You have 2 packman entries. You only need 1. Remove one of these. Having 2 will slow down your package manager IMHO.

Entry 8 and entry 14. You have two Non-OSS entries. You only need 1. Remove one of these. Having 2 will slow down your package manager IMHO.

Entry 9 and entry 15. You have two OSS entries. You only need 1. Remove one of these. Having 2 will slow down your package manager IMHO.

Entry-10 - CD. I recommend you disable this. If you leave this enabled, many times when you go to install software you will get a cryptic message asking you to insert you installation CD/DVD. Simply disable this. Then it will get the packages you need off of the OSS directory, as opposed to the CD.

have done all the changes as you said… firefox didn’t freeze, since I disabled the multiple multimedia plugins, maybe they were actually conflicting each other or something, as you said! thank you:)
