Thread: x11 not starting automatically on opensuse11.2 gnome

  1. #1

Default x11 not starting automatically on opensuse11.2 gnome

I am using Dell Vostro 1000 and I recently installed opensuse 11.2 gnome. It has ATI graphics card.

The x server does not automatically start by itself nor does the GUI login screen come up.

I have to login through the command line and startx manually to start x11.

It never had any problems with 11.1. Should I go back to 11.1 Please help!

I just checked and verified that the /sbin/runlevel is 5.

I will attach log/messages and dmesg as soon as I get a chance.

Please also advise exactly what ATI graphic card.

Please note post#8 in this thread, where an user whos Acer Aspire 5100 has an ATI Radeon Express 1100 and they found they had to download the xorg-11-driver-video update form Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg:/11.2/openSUSE_11.2 to fix a similar problem. Thread is here (again, post#8 has their solution): Can't get X to start on Acer Aspire 5100 - openSUSE Forums

Yes it looks like it is set to a runlevel 5.

    Expert Mode

Set default runlevel after booting to:
5: Full multiuser with network and display manager

    --

Service will be started in the following runlevels

    3 5

Sorry, I was not able to figure out how to attach a screenshot so I had to write in words.

I am not able to install the latest x11 drivers (xorg-x11-driver-video-32bit-7.4-87.92.1.x86_64.rpm). It is giving me the following error message

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
An Internal System error has occured.
A problem we were not expecting has occured.
Please report this bug in your distribution bug tracker ...
    [PK_TMP_DIR|dir:///var/tmp/TmpDir.y4GtvN] Repository already exists.
