Remove Userlist From GDM?

Hi All

I install 11.2 64bit and I need to remove the list of users at the login prompt of GDM. I looked though yast2 and there is no configuration section for GDM. Is the an official method for having just a simple prompt for username and password?

Hi
Use gconf-editor and under apps/gdm/simple-greeter check the box
‘disable_user_list’

Thanks a bunch.

Hi There

I tried changing this setting and restarted. It didn’t change the existence of the list. I also had another user try it and it didn’t work for them either. Our IT folks don’t want the user list because of security issues. Can I use a different login manager?

Also, I found this on google. Perhaps it is a similar issue but that setting change doesn’t work on Ubuntu either.

How to disable user list in log-in screen? - Ubuntu Forums

Hi
Little different for openSUSE (command all on one line);

sudo gconftool-2 --set
--type=bool /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list true

Hi Again

Thanks for getting back to me. That still didn’t work and I have confirmed that disable_user_list is set to true after rebooting. I am guessing there is some problem similar to the new ubuntu. Nobody can seem to get rid of the user list.

I my case, I have to get rid of it. Is the a replacement login manager?

Hi
Strange, works fine for me… 11.2, SLES11 and SLED11. Didn’t have to
reboot, just logout and no list.

You could use xdm.

I will try to confirm with another group in our lab that I know updated to 11.2 and get back. Strange that I can’t get it to work on either machine and a colleague down the hall has the same issue.

I’ll get back to this thread.

Kev

Try SLiM.

I’ve just checked and I also can’t disable user list.

OK,

I checked with two other users in my lab and they cannot make the User List go away in GDM. I am not sure where to look but this must be an issue for the GDM development people since it is occuring for both SUSE 11.2 and the new Ubuntu.

Hi
So it works for me… hmmmm.

Can you compare the /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.schemas/%gconf-tree.xml
entries.

I’ve got ‘false’ here. After change no user list is displayed. :good:

Hi
Ok, I’m guessing you need to run the command as root rather than sudo
to effect a change.

Hi All

I emailed the package maintainer and he came up with the answer. You use gconf-editor as originally described but you also need to right click “disable_user_list” and set “Set as Default”. It worked fine for me.

Hi
Thanks for the update
