Thread: Group Memberships - error & Members group ?

  1. #1

Lightbulb Group Memberships - error & Members group ?

1/ From my user profile page, I have access to the link http://forums.opensuse.org/groups/

However, when I click on the link "Join a social group" I obtain an error ("This webpage has a redirect loop.")

I guess there is something to fix server side.

2/ If 1/ can be solved, why not creating an "openSUSE member" group ? Showing our belonging of this group can motivate other people to apply for membership.. and to contribute to the project

thanks for pointing out the error, however this came up before i think..

i believe the answer was that this community doesn't (yet?) use that
(standard) social networking feature of the selected forum software
    (Mediawiki)..

that software was upgraded last week (http://tinyurl.com/yjfbyro) and
i think the dead link you see today is only because someone has not
yet spelunked the guts to repair/remove it..

    patience is a virtue..

I guess that you're confusing the forum Software (vBulletin) and the Wiki software (MediaWiki) which aren't related in any way.

Thus, the recent update is not related to this dead link (which was also unusable before the wiki update if I remember correctly). Also, I'm part of the current Wiki Team.. and the basis of the original mail (commented by Rajko) that you pointed out was written by myself

you are correct, i was thinking wiki and talking forum..

the previous thread on this same 'problem' is here:
    http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php?t=424744

    which includes

"This is a known issue with the social groups feature - but as we
don't use the "social groups" feature, it's not a high priority to
correct this problem. ... I've asked if it can be removed since we
    don't use it."

i was thinking maybe it *had* been fixed and the (imaginary) update
    broke it, again..

obviously it has not been 'fixed'..

therefore the OP should attempt to ignore the dead end..

The OP, who is the person you are still talking to.

    You need a coffee palladium?

Spyhawk - I'm interested in the wiki team. Do I understand that you can just get on the mailing list for it? It's not ridiculously high-volume, is it? It's just that I don't normally use IRC - and would like to help out, but don't want to unleash an avalanche unless I have to...

[P.S. I like your Ghost in the Shell quote. I have the book - it's awesome]

yep! i'm trying to get too much stuff done today....

define "ridiculously high-volume"...or, realize that within the group
you will have threads that don't interest you...just delete those as
    they come in...

i joined the group about a month ago and have found it a problem, on
the contrary i have it informative..

You will find an idea about the message volume here : openSUSE Mailinglist Archive: opensuse-wiki

    Ah, yes

Having a blonde moment - it didn't occur to me that there would be public archives.

Thanks for both your replies - I guess I'll get another email address to use for this sort of thing, then sign up!

We don't use the "social groups" feature - but apparently it can't be
turned off completely. It is on our list of things to address, but
    relatively low at this point.
