    Smile Calibre : a complete e-library solution : installation 11.2

calibre is available via one-click through the Build Service search portal, but the installation did not work for me.
I wanted to share an alternative way to install this excellent application that worked on two different machines running opensuse 11.2

    Calibre website : calibre
Entry from Opensuse packager Thomas Schraitle : openSUSE Lizards Reading EBooks With Calibre (wanted to leave a comment there comemnt section is closed)

    Installation :

Go to Download calibre for linux – calibre
and check all Dependencies are met - install everything you are missing (I used Yast2)
    Notes on some depedencies :
Install podofo, libpodofo and libpodofo devel from Build service I took Thomas Schraitle versions.
Also, install or reinstall : libpython2_6-1_0
from Build service, there is a need for this library to be "dynamic" (if not, there will be an error that will mention it afterwards)
(I took it from Index of /repositories/windows:/mingw/openSUSE_11.2 )
dnspython depedency is not met for Opensuse, the version needed is higher.
You can install the current one from : dnspython home page
(presently its : Index of /kits/1.7.1 and download dnspython-1.7.1.tar.gz
install as per README file - extract, cd to the folder, and type "python setup.py install")

    Finally, download calibre :
calibre-ebook - Project Hosting on Google Code
choose calibre-0.6.24.tar.gz (or whatever newer version is available)
and install as per INSTALL file : (extract, cd to the folder, and type "python setup.py install")

If any errors, you can copy them and google them, or search directly through the official website section.

I highly recommend this software, it is a perfect solution for maintaining an ebook library and it has good documentation on its use too.

And hopefully a little fun time for its installation along the way !

    cheers

    Hello,

I installed it easily by this line that I found on their site:
    Code:
    python -c "import urllib2; exec urllib2.urlopen('http://status.calibre-ebook.com/linux_installer').read(); main()"

Everything works fine. I think that it may be needed to check interface for accessibility features too.

    Regards,

    vedran

installation from their website is easy, but if & when you want to uninstall callibre, you'll have to search thru' the install manifest and remove several dozen files manually from various locations.

i've seen a discussion on the author's blog where he refuses to provide an un-install script, saying it's either the distro's or the users' job to do that...

oops...just saw that there's a "develop install" script which installs only binaries into /usr/bin; everything else is put into ~/home and read from there. this should be less trouble to un-install eventually...

Sorry, but ... when did it happen that this repository stopped calibre package distribution ... ?

    Index of /repositories/home:/thomas-schraitle/openSUSE_11.2

I mean, I set it as a repository, but now i see it doesn't cointain the calibre package anymore ... (x86_64 version)

Only "manual" install from now on?

    TNX in advance.

    Hi
Looks like there is an issue with the building of that package, you
need to contact the packager thomas{dot}schraitle{at}novell{dot}com
