Default Cannot launch URL from Thunderbird 3.04b to Firefox

This is a fresh install of 11.2 KDE-4.3.1.

After reviewing all of the 11.2 Milestone 64-bit DVDs, Milestone 1 - 8 - I was always able to launch Firefox from Thunderbird in search of add-ons or an html link.

It stopped working in RC1, RC2.

I thought this was resolved for openSUSE 11.2. The problem still exists!

Now, thinking the problem was with Thunderbird 3.0.4b. I navigated to Configure Desktop --> Personal Settings --> General --> Default Applications:

Changed Email Client from KMail to Thunderbird

From within KMail I can launch Firefox. However, Thunderbird 3.0.4b does NOT launch Konqueror nor Firefox 3.5.4 !!

In addition the Thunderbird 3.04b Help does NOT work.

Could the setting of Default Applications be broken in KDE-4.3.1 " release 6 " ??

I'm sure I cannot be the only one experiencing this at home???

    Default MIME - type handling

I'm not sure, but your problem sounds similar to the annoying bug that starts konqueror and firefox if you follow the link in plasmoid RSSNOW.

    Hi, Romanator,

I'm experiencing the exact same problem so you're not the only one. I even tried installing Thunderbird 2 from Index of /repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_11.2 but the problem was still there. I also went to Configure Desktop --> Default Applications to change the default mail client and web browser but none of that made any difference. The problem was still there.

Same problem here. After two fresh installs (one machine being a 32bit laptop, the other a 64bit laptop) Thunderbird does not start any browser, be it Firefox or Konqueror.

I found a fix for this until they can find a patch.

    1. Launch Thunderbird
    2. Navigate to Edit --> Preferences --> Advanced and click on the Config Editor button
    3. Search for the following 3 entries:

    Code:
    network.protocol-handler.warn-external.ftp default boolean false
    network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http default boolean false

    network.protocol-handler.warn-external.https default boolean false
Change them by toggling from "false" to "true" as shown below:

    Code:
network.protocol-handler.warn-external.ftp user set boolean true network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http user set boolean true network.protocol-handler.warn-external.https user set boolean true
Close the Config Editor and navigate to the Thunderbird's menu and select Tools --> Add-ons and click on the Browse all Add-ons link. This will call up the 'Launch Application' window so that you can specify a web browser application ie. Firefox

    Launch Application Window

    • Next to Choose an Application click on the Choose button
    • Navigate to /usr/bin/firefox
    • The firefox selection will now appear highlighted in blue
    • Select and click next to "Remember my choice for https links
    • Click on the OK button to confirm. You will note that Firefox will now launch every time you select a hyper link or browse for add-on info from Thunderbird

    Success!!!!

I hope this helps you all.

As a follow up to yesterday's comments, I reinstalled from the openSUSE 11.2 64-bit DVD. However, this time I installed GNOME - in GNOME Thunderbird can launch Firefox but cannot in KDE4.

This leads me to suspect that KDE 4.3.1 " release 6 " Default Application system settings was broken when RC1 - RC2 and the final release of openSUSE 11.2. It was working in Milestone 8.

So, I reinstalled Milestone 8 and updated the installation with 11.2 final release.

Now, by default I can now launch Firefox from within Thunderbird.

Hopefully, we will see a patch available as an update in the near future.

When I click on the "Launch Application Window" No window comes up so am unable to select Thunderbird.

As a matter of fact, now I'm unable to even sign in to this forum on FF.

    Hi,
I just update Thunderbird through Yast to version 3.0 and the hyper links work. And updated FF to 3.6beta2
I still can't log in to This forum. I'm using Konqueror to post this.

This might be totally unrelated: Right after the 11.2 installation, before ever starting Thunderbird, I could not log into the SuSE Forum either. Other forums worked, Firefox looked fine. I resolved the issue by copying the .mozilla folder from my pre-installation backup into my home directory, overwriting the current .mozilla folder. Works fine since.
