Default KDE4 won't unmount usb disk?

I recently made the switch to KDE4, and have a strange problem. My printer has an SD card slot (Brother 385-c). You can print photos from an SD card directly without having to use a program, which is very convenient.

The problem is that KDE4 never seems to fully unmount the disk, so the printer can't access it (says it is in use by the computer).

I never had this problem in KDE3, and the only way I have found to get around it is to turn off the computer while printing from the SD card, or disconnecting the usb cable between the printer and the computer.

I've tried using the device notifier, Dolphin, and Konsole commands (umount) to unmount the disk, but none seem to fully "release" the device to the printer can access it again.

Is there another method of unmounting the device that I can try? When I was in KDE3, any of the above methods would work.

If you have 'Places' set enabled in the View - Panels section of Dolphin

Does the SD card show there
And if you right click it, do you see 'Release' and or 'Unmount'?

    Could be a policykit issue

I'm having the same problem with USB sticks, they don't seem to want to unmount. If I hover the cursor over the disk icon the tool tip says right mouse button to safely remove, but that option isn't there when I right click.

I did get a safely remove option in dolphin, but the disk doesn't seem to unmount the LED on the disk stays on and the disk is still listed in my computer.

Still, this is the only issue with my new pc running 11.2, so at the moment I'm quite impressed, it's the best installation of any suse I've used since 9.x, and by a big margin.

I have the same problem as well. With KDE4, I can never seem to properly unmount the USB device. If I unmount it, close Dolphin, and open it again, I can still navigate through the drive and open files. And there's still an option to unmount the USB. Very strange. Never had this problem with GNOME.

what about if you unmount the device as root using a console? open console and type

    su
    root password
    umount /dev/sdxx

where sdxx is the device label. should work, agreed it shouldn't be the way you have to do it, but it's a work around until you can find another way

Yes, the SD car does show up in Dolphin, and there is a "Safely Remove" option. The problem is when you select to "Safely Remove" it, it never really "releases" the card.

I've tried this, and it doesn't seem to help. I've even tried mounting and then unmounting it using console commands, and it didn't work either.

It almost seems as if the KDE4 "Device Notifier" is not fully releasing the disk, and then takes control of it immediately as soon as it is unmounted by any means....
