Thread: A list of softwares

  1. #1

    Default A list of softwares

    Hello,

Usually the name of softwares in Linux system are not very clear.
I need a list of Opensuse compatible free softwares with a short explanation of the software.
I googled it but I could not find a good list.

    Thanks

Enable the Packman repository, see http://en.opensuse.org/Add_Package_Repositories_to_YaST amd http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_Ya...e_Repositories
Ensure you have the oss, non-oss and updates repositories enabled also.

The YAST GUI has all you need - all the packages available in the repositories and their descriptions. YaST/Modules/Software Management - openSUSE

If you can't find it in YAST it might be available in the Buildservice, see Software.openSUSE.org

I dont think it has a .rpm for openSUSE, so you have two options:
Compile from source or convert the ubuntu/debian .deb into a .rpm with alien, for you I suggest alien as even if its not a ideal solution it is easier then compiling.

Download the source code and compile it OR read the install or readme file inside the archive you just downloaded.
    Common steps are:
enter to the directory in terminal and unzip it.
    ./configure
    make
    make install
And if you want to remove the configuration files later:
    make clean
    make distclean
Feel free to ask if you need more help.

i _think_ there is a third option: ask the Build Service to build an
openSUSE compatible package for all of us to have access to..
