NVIDIA garbage on startup/login and window locations

NVIDIA garbage:

More of an aesthetic issue but when I startup or restart the x server my first monitor flashes random images* for a moment and my second monitor will show garbage until I actually login and my wallpaper shows up.

  • The images aren’t actually random. Most of the time it looks like what was displayed previously (peices of it anyway). For example when I logged out of one account and switched to another I saw the icon for the application switcher and a piece of firefox.

This person has a simmiliar problem (no solution was posted though):

Window Locations:

I moved my taskbar panel (KDE4 plasmas etc) to the top of my screen which works great when Kwin is my window manager but when I use compiz windows are created at the top of the screen leaving there title bars “below” the taskbar or out of screen. How can I change where windows are created by default?

For the NVidia garbage, I had the same issue with ‘garbage’ being shown on screen during the transition from KDM to the KDE splash screen. However, after I installed the latest drivers from the NVidia website manually, version 190.42, this issue went away.

There is a wiki link that shows how to use the NVidia drivers from the NVidia website:

NVIDIA/The hard way - openSUSE

It says ‘the hard way’, but it is not very hard at all. Just be aware, that you will need to recompile the drivers anytime your kernel is updated.

Hopes that helps.

If I already installed the nvidia drivers from the repos is there a special way I should uninstall them so I don’t ruin my system when I install the newer drivers?

Good question. I’m not sure…

I would probably download the new drivers, zypper rm the old drivers, reboot, then install the new drivers - just to be safe. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if you could simply just install the new drivers.

That´s where I pop in. :wink:

If this is the black-and-white-block-issue, then I´ve been coping with this a long time ago. Rest assured, it is not an issue resulting in taking “the easy way”.
Try this: Go to Yast2 -> Software Management and search for kde4-kdm-branding. Results showing up should be:

1 Kde4-kdm-branding-openSUSE
2 Kde4-kdm-branding-upstream

FIX: Select 2 (Kde4-kdm-branding-upstream) and then unselect 1 (Kde4-kdm-branding-openSUSE) - you should be good to go now.

Cheers, buddy.

Another way I got rid of this in the past (as shown on one of the forumns).

Change /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/SUSE/suse.xml line five to read (if
it dosen’t already):

Code

Original:

<item type=“pixmap” id=“background”>

New

<item type=“pixmap” id=“background” background=“true”>

I’m running 11.2 RC2 and did clean install so I assume this has been fixed,
I did not change it this time. I’m running 190.42 driver.

I quite like the ‘garbage’

Is the ‘garbage’ just the nvidia splash screen, or are we talking
‘christmas trees’ here?
