    Simple.

    You compile something as user, then you do "su" before doing the install
    phase, because if you do "su -" you change directory. That's why it is
    typical to do the install with a simple su.

    would one tweak each time, immediately before becoming root?

    or is it possible to tweak once and the shell startup always 'knows'
