Thread: Updates from milestones to release

Default Updates from milestones to release

    Dear All,

I would like to ask a question. I just installed openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 8. I just noticed that the release candidate has been released. Do I need to reinstall or will a normal yast update bring me to the RC version? Also, when 11.2 will come out, do I need to reinstall or can I just chage the URL of a few repositories and be aligned with 11.2?

    Thank you for your help

From a console, run the command 'sudo zypper dup', which should update
you to RC1. It worked for me. When RC2 and the GM come out, the same
command should update you to the next level. At that point, the update
repo will become active, and a normal YaST update, or 'sudo zypper up'
    will then be appropriate.

As lwfinger noted, you can update via zypper.

Still, your question sort of begs the question in my mind, ... why have you installed 11.2 ? 11.2 is recommended only for testing, and not as a full up system. It has many bugs that still have to be fixed.

If you are looking for an "operational configuration" then unless you have some hardware specifics in your PC that can ONLY be solved by 11.2, I recommend you stick with 11.1 until 11.2 GM is released (in about a months time).

If one is writting bug reports, IMHO they are easier to understand, if one has a fixed configuration associated with a specific milestone or RCx release, as opposed to some middle of the road factory configuration.

And finally, I note this is your first post here ...
hence WELCOME to openSUSE and to openSUSE forums.

    Dear All,

first of all thanks for the welcome. Actually, I was on the old OpenSuse forums and I have been an on and off OpenSuse user for around 4 years now. Anyway, I am glad to be back.

Also, I am sorry for the delay in answering but I could not get back here for some time.

Regarding the update from Milestone to RC and onward. I have installed it because I needed to use versions of software that are only available in 11.2

My original idea was to reinstall when 11.2 comes out. But now I know that 11.2 sports a smooth update feature, so I will follow your advice.

Thanks again for your help and sorry again for the delay

Valmar, some of the 11.2 repos are already open.
