    I have kernel module for my webcam, and is working fine with kopete and even cheese. No issues with recording and taking images.
    openSUSE 11.2 KDE.

    Its night ATM.

    It isn't working for me. I have Microsoft VX-3000, listed on the gspca page. Neither kopete, amsn or cheese will give me a picture. When I start them, the cam light goes on. But, no picture.

    Hey Prexy, it makes a difference as to whether one has Gnome or KDE or some other desktop. Can you help us out here and tell us what desktop you have? Have you installed v4l applications? What v4l applications have you installed? What gstreamer applications do you have installed (for note Cheese is a gnome application and requires gstreamer apps in addition to v4l) ?

    I documented some of my experiences here:
    Cheese in 11.2 - openSUSE Forums

    I keep finding it necessary to go to gstreamer-properties and reconfigure after each boot, in order to get my webcam working with more than just amsn.

    So we can double check what you say about your webcam being a gscpca webcam, can you with your webcam plugged in provide the output of:

    install libv4l and try run that:
    LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so <app_name>.
    Example:
    LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

    I did take a look at the Cheese threads. I'll reread them. I also tried the preload and saw no difference.

    Its easier if you use the rpm command to querry from a terminal. for example on my PC
    Code:
    oldcpu@hal2000:~> rpm -qa '*v4l*'
    libpt2-plugins-v4l2-2.6.5-2.5.x86_64

    To configure gstreamer, I think you need the application 'gnome-media' and then need to run "gstreamer-properties".

    I don't suppose the manufacturer of this web cam provides Linux support?

    ... anyway, the gspca web site notes it uses the ov7660 sensor, and I note the files m5602_ov7600.c, and m5602_ov7660.h under /usr/src/linux-2.6.31.5-0.1/drivers/media/video/gspca/m5602/

    and also sn9c102_ov7660.cv under
    /usr/src/linux-2.6.31.5-0.1/drivers/media/video/sn9c102/

    So the library/driver ( ? ) for the webcam sensor is there. We likely just need to figure out what app you are missing.

    Also, did you try any of the advice here:
    HCL/Web Cameras - openSUSE
    to preload a libv4l-compat library?

    I ran this. There are four options. Each one gives me the error message: no element "null".

    I also tried the pre-load and it had no discernible effect. There are old Ubuntu answers on this problem and they all involve installing gspcav. But that didn't always work, either.
