Thread: system hangs up after a while!! HW problem?

Question system hangs up after a while!! HW problem?

    Hello,

I am facing a problem with my SUSE 10.3 installation.
Maybe HW problem, I don't know.

Problem: after some minutes of inactivity system log-out in screensaver modus and it just hangs.Cannot log-in anymore, can only control the mouse-arrow. Black screen, no usual log-in window. Brute-force reboot required.
After booting I am asked to do manually fsck every time.

    What I tried already:
Fsck on / and /home -> some errors fixed -> Problem still there(PST).
booting from SUSE-installation CD + fsck -> some errors fixed -> PST
    touch /forcefsck -> PST

    Noticed in /var/log/firewall:
    Code:
(gedit:6247): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to store changes into `/root/.recently-used.xbel', but failed: Failed to create file '/root/.recently-used.xbel.NXRM1U': Read-only file system
    I/O error : Read-only file system
    I/O error : Read-only file system
Seems system goes automatically in "read-only filesystem modus" after a while and then cause further problems (cannot run properly several programs) until it hangs up when screensaver start.

Q1: how to desable screesaver with GNOME in control-center? cannot find the option

Q: could the problem be the AFS server (see below in "mount")? I could remove it, because I don't need it anymore.

    My partition config:
    Code:

It's possible that the display adapter driver could be causing hanging or perhaps it's going to sleep mode.

What adapter does your machine have?

    Hi,

    some more informations needed:

Do you have the possibilibty to log in from remote (ssh) e. g. with a notebook or any other machine in your network? If so pls try to get remote access and type on the console:

    Code:
    ps aux
    top
    tail -100 /var/log/messages
and post the result. To avoid the hard shutdown type:

    Code:
    reboot
If you can't do that just type after the failure appears and the reboot:

    Code:
    cat /var/log/messages
and look for the lines with the timestamp just before the error appeared and post them here.

    Bye

    Erik

    @Chrysantine:
    NVIDIA QUADRO FX 1400

running SaX2 I got the msg:
"cannot offer activation of the 3D substytem because your graphic card/driver does not support 3D"

    @erikro

yes I could log in from an ext.pc

here the results (while the problem is not occurred yet, I will also repeat it after system hang up again, thks for the tip):

Exclamation Re: tried new graphic card driver -> kernel problem

    Hello again,

I downloaded from NVIDIA the new driver and follow the installation procedure.

    I get the following error:
    Code:
    ERROR: The kernel header file
           '/lib/modules/2.6.22.5-31-default/build/include/linux/kernel.h' does not
exist. The most likely reason for this is that the kernel source path
'/lib/modules/2.6.22.5-31-default/build' is incorrect. Please make sure
you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they
are properly configured; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure
you have the 'kernel-source' or 'kernel-devel' RPM installed. If you
know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may specify the
kernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path' command line option.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions
on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
           driver download page at www.nvidia.com.
    what to do now???
    thanks for help!

First of all open a new thread. I don't think that this has to do with your first problem.

A reason of the other problem could be the beagle running on your system. Kill that useless dog. Beagle is known for causing various performance problems. So it could be that your computer doesn't hang but is that slow that you think it hangs while beagle is doing his useless indexing.

    Bye

    Erik
