Thread: sync command hangs !

  1. #1

    Default sync command hangs !

    Hi to all!

since yesterday (probably an automatic system update, no way to remember), when I use the "sync" command, the process hangs with status "D". (uninterruptible sleep, from the man for ps) : nothing to do except closing the console window : obviously, "kill -9" from root does nothing... I get a fine collection of sleeping sync processes

Apart of that, all seems to run fine.

Of course, I cannot reboot cleanly (shutdown probably calls sync), worse, I don't dare to.

    Any idea ?

Which is the risk in "brute boot" ? (one finger boot : with to power-off button : I know, it's ugly, but ;-)

Thanks to all for your help!

    context: opensuse 11.1, gnome

Read the rest of that line:

    D Uninterruptible sleep (usually IO)

As the sync command's entire purpose is to flush cached data to disk this
makes sense. If you have a lot of data to flush then it may take a while.
I've never seen the sync command not come back (eventually) though I've
had to wait a couple minutes from time to time. If you have a lot of GB
of data in RAM that could take longer. Perhaps watch your disk IO to see
if it is actually writing like it should be. See if 'iostat' works on
your system to watch the Disk IO.

Yes, sync is called during shutdown (of course.... get data out of RAM
before RAM is cleared and the data are lost) which would explain your slow
    shutdown.

    Good luck.
