    Default OpenSuSE 11.2 RC1 issues

    Hi,

After installing openSuSE 11.2 RC1 (gnome livecd) after many, many years of mainly Fedora use, I encountered the following issues:

    1. Firefox font rendering is abysmal compared to Fedora or Ubuntu. Look at gmail for instance, it hurts my eyes. This is a showstopper for me, has this something to do with the way Firefox is compiled for openSuSE ?

    2. The cpufreq applet in gnome is not correctly working, clicking on the applet does not let you choose your cpu frequency, instead nothing happens. This may be a permissions issue somewhere.

    3. The restart button in Gnome does not restart your system, this is a known bug (see the 11.2 RC1 release notes).

    4. Missing icons for some applications (i.e. "Remote Desktop Viewer" after I did a dist-upgrade.

    5. The "System" tab in the "System Monitor" does not work, clicking on it crashes the application (gnome-system-monitor).

Has anybody else seen these particular issues ?

In order to "cut to the chase" how about putting up a screen dump so users can undertand what you are talking about ? ... ie understand how fonts can hurt the eyes ? A site where you can host our example is here: ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing

Did you install the application "Remote Desktop Viewer" yet? Have you run it yet?

I've uploaded an old Fedora screenshot: ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing

Compare it to the SuSE screenshot: ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing

You can tweak the font rendering / style / face at your wish.

    A "wontfix" bug:

Bug 548023 - Gnome applet CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor doesn't show menu
with supported frequency levels on left click on it

    Yes, a well-known bug :-(

Did you try another theme? :-?

Does not happen here. Open a bug report for the crash.

You would get more suitable answers in the "prerelease-beta" forum :-)

I know I can tweak the Firefox settings, but it's not helping in any way. Look at the two screenshots I posted above; compare the gnome desktop fonts in SuSE to the ones in Firefox. And then do the same comparison for the Fedora screenshot. The quality difference is very obvious. This has nothing to do with settings I'm afraid.

    Cheers,

    Eric

Apologies, ... I beg to differ. I believe it is possible to change the settings you see in SuSE to be similar to the one's you like in Fedora.

For what its worth, I SIGNIFICANTLY prefer the SuSE settings over the fat heavy ugly one's in the Fedora example you gave. My gosh !!

Hence IMHO this is very subjective.

Still, it should be possible to tune the settings you see in openSUSE. Is this only in Firefox, or elsewhere on the desktop ?

Okay, look at this screenshot, it reminds me of the RedHat 6.2 days

    Cheers,

    Eric

p.s. anyway, I'll revert back to Fedora
