    Default New PC Help

    Hi there.

i'm thinking about getting a new PC and i intent to put OpenSuse (11.2) on it.

I would like some help, (since I'm not absolutely sure this configuration is OK)

    here's my initial idea:

Motherboard - ASUS P5QL SE INTEL LGA775 SATA PCIE
    CPU - INTEL PENTIUM DUAL-CORE E5300 2.6GHZ 775 FSB800 2MBGIGALAN AUDIO HD
    RAM - KINGSTON 2GB DDR2-800 MODULE
HardDrive - SAMSUNG HDD SAMSUNG 160GB 7,200RPM SERIAL ATA II 16MB CACHE
    Graphic card - XFX GEFORCE 8400 GS PCI-E 512MB DDR2 DVI PCI-E

Can someone please give me a hand? I don't know if OpenSuse will work ok with this hardware. For example, i have no clue if the Graphic card is OK nor any other piece.

So, please help me getting a good configuration!

    thanks in advance

Looks OK to me. You shouldn't have any problems with it. Also your graphics card is nvidia which is a good thing as you won't be pulling your hairs out trying to install drivers... or maybe you want to pull your hairs out? If so, get an ATi

Oh ATi, yeah right! I have other reasons to pull my hairs out and really don't need new one. And beside i just got a new hair cut LOL and my barber really knows more about hair than me, so i'll let those things to him LOLOLOL

    but back to the subject

so, you mean that with this hardware opensuse will make full use of it (e.g. opensuse will make use of the full power of the graphic card, without me having to pull my hairs out)?!

Thank you so much for all your help I intent to put o-n-l-y opensuse in this computer, so it has to work like a charm

Yes, it will. The HW you chose is pretty standard so it shouldn't give you any (major) problems

If you still want to check on things, SUSE has a hardware compatibility list (HCL), though note that it isn't always up to date and some things may be missing http://en.opensuse.org/Hardware

    Unhappy Re: New PC Help

OK, since some of the pieces of the hardware i listed above are not for sale anymore ... i would like to know about this ones:

    MotherBoard:
    ASUS P5KPL-AM EPU G31 775C2D 1333 2XDDRII800 VGA PCI-X

    CPU:
    INTEL PENTIUM DUAL-CORE E6300 2.8GHZ 775 FSB1066 2MB

    RAM:
    KINGSTON 2GB DDR2-800 MODULE

    Graphic Card:
    XFX GF 9400GT 1GB DDR2 DVI HDTV PCI-X

I'm sorry for asking again, i've checked the Hardware page and i didn't find any Motherboards, CPU's or RAM's listed for desktops... can you please enlighten me why there aren't none???

Also... the new graphic card i found isn't listed there either... does this mean that it is not compatible with suse?

    Thanks

There doesn't appear to be anything particularly unique about your new setup. All of the hardware looks pretty standard.

Any Nvidia card is covered by Nvidia's proprietary driver, so there's no worry there, you just need to remember to install the driver. You should be good to go.
    My personal philosophy:
The only way you won't find something is if you stop looking.

    Hi

I have installed openSUSE on ASUS P5KPL before. That was probably a different flavour of the board, but it should work anyway. Be aware that this MotherBoard has an integrated VGA controller. When you add another graphics card I guess you have to select the right one in the BIOS.

Well, i've installed it today and so far so good!!!

However i had to change the Graphic card for the 9500GT since the shop didn't had the one i choose the last time (anyway this is a bit better )

now... there is still a small little detail i need help with:

i've found this page Nvidia Installer HOWTO for SUSE LINUX users which tells how to install the drivers.

    but in there is
    "Directory on Server: /opensuse/11.1"

should i follow the instructions exactly or should i change the directory to
    "Directory on Server: /opensuse/11.2"

    since i'm using 11.2???

    Thanks
