Default Iiyama E2001WSV and Asus M4A785TD-V EVO

    Hi,
I've just installed OpenSuse for the first time and on new hardware. I have a problem that it will not let me set the correct settings for the monitor. The monitor's native resolution is 1680x1050, but the nearest I can set through Sax2 is 1400x1050 or 1600x1200. I'm using the motherboard's graphics card. Can somebody help pointing me in the right direction please?

    Regards
    Andy

Open the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf with an editor, familiarize, and post the file contents back here.

Hi consused, the contents of the xorg.conf file are as below. I've now found the 1 click install but that has also not worked. The log file is rather long so I'll see if I can find the relevant part.

I think the offending lines from the log file are

    (II) Reloading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/linux//libfglrxdrm.so
    FATAL: Module fglrx not found.
    drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0

I have been following the instructions at //en.opensuse.org/ATI_Driver_HOWTO#1-click_install. The log file was generated when I ran the command SaX2 -r -m 0=fglrx

    Hi Andy
The first thing I have noticed is the driver specified in xorg.conf, Section "Device", is "fbdev" i.e. the frame buffer device driver. It may not support your resolution and will probably gobble too much cpu utilization. You clearly want to use the fglrx driver, and it cannot find the driver module. Did you install it correctly? Are you on 11.1, 32bit or 64bit, KDE3 or 4, or Gnome?

Also, check Section "Monitor" to make sure the settings match your monitor's specs.

Notice this statement: Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024"

Not all drivers support that statement so it may/not be used. You will need to check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, after the "fbdev" module is loaded the (II) messages will be followed by the drivers name and then the information. Have a look to see if it's accepted or rejected?

It might be a good idea to post here the log from the point that the driver named (II) lines begin to the end. Thanks.

Try this if it will work. in yast2-hardware-graphic card and monitor. In monitor click change, In display size-diagonal and aspect ratio, under diagonal choose not configured and in Display size(mm) fill in the x axis(horizontal) and y axis(vertical) measurement of your screen in millimeter. Click okey, and save as prompted.Logout and login.

Note: As soon as you fill-in the right x and y axis measurement you will notice that under diagonal size, the not configured will change into the size of your monitor.

I think there is a problem with the driver as I've now found the Catalyst Control Centre but it is complaining that the driver isn't loaded. I've also been going through the troubleshooting and building a package for the driver but the latest error is that I haven't specified a target or a makefile.

I'm trying to get this running on 11.1 64bit Gnome.

As far as the fbdev driver goes, the log confirms that it cannot handle your default mode so it has picked the nearest it can i.e. 1400x1050. It checked its supported modes against both the framebuffer device (your card) and your monitor.

You could also try the "vesa" driver with command SaX2 -r -m 0=vesa

It may get further than the "fbdev" driver, but it may support Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024" and stick on that mode. You can comment that line out in the xorg.conf (insert # as first char of line). The vesa driver's refresh rate support isn't great, but it's useful to find out the best fallback driver for your hardware, particularly if you get future problems with kernel updates and the ATI driver.

I agree your main concern is the fglrx driver modules. I am not familiar enough with ATI drivers, so I would search the forum for previous threads using terms e.g compile ATI fglrx. I had a quick look, and some threads talk about compiling versus properly installing the proprietary drivers, and comments on success are somewhat variable. You may have done this already, and also searched on your particular ATI hardware..

Failing that, hopefully someone with ATI driver expertise will come by and assist further.

If you still need assistance with the fglrx driver problem and noone comes by, you should consider starting a new thread for it with an appropriate subject, including driver name.
