Thread: no gnome desktop

  1. #1

    Default no gnome desktop

I primarily use KDE 4.3 on my openSuse 11.1 installation. A few weeks back I installed GNOME as an additional option (just to play with). After installation, it came up and I did customizations, etc. Then I went back to KDE for a while. Now when I try GNOME, I don't get a desktop. The panel comes up, I get internet connection, all apps from the menu work, but the mouse pointer continues to spin while the desktop itself remains black. I'm not sure if an update broke my GNOME or if one or more packages inadvertently got removed.

Could I be missing any packages or is there something I can do to get the desktop back?

I should add that I am installing GNOME from the GNOME:Factory repository, which I believe should be at version 2.28 of GNOME, right?

I also discovered that although most applications work, the Install Software does not work. I'm getting the following error message:

    Code:
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'YUIPluginException'
      what():  Couldn't load plug-in gtk
YaST got signal 6 at YCP file Wizard.ycp:691
    /sbin/yast2: line 440: 28695 Aborted $ybindir/y2base $module "$@" "$SELECTED_GUI" $Y2_GEOMETRY $Y2UI_ARGS
    Hope this helps.

Does anyone have experience with GNOME, particularly in troubleshooting that might be able to offer any suggestions on this?

I'd like to be able to play with GNOME, but it's not currently in a usable state on my machine.

@caf4926: Thank you for your reply. Here is the output of the command:

Honestly. I'm not sure what to advise except say: Why do you need all those repo's?

    For Example....Here is my list:
    1 | packman_1 | packman | Yes | Yes | 90 | rpm-md | Index of /packman/suse/11.1 |
    2 | 43_Desktop | 43 Desktop | Yes | Yes | 98 | rpm-md | Index of /repositories/KDE:/43/openSUSE_11.1 |
    3 | kde4_community_factory | kde4 community factory | Yes | Yes | 98 | rpm-md | Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.1_KDE4_Factory_Desktop |
    4 | Updates | Updates | Yes | Yes | 99 | rpm-md | UK Mirror Service: sites/download.opensuse.org/update/11.1 |
    5 | Non-oss | Non-oss | Yes | Yes | 100 | yast2 | UK Mirror Service: sites/download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1/repo/non-oss |
    6 | Oss | Oss | Yes | Yes | 100 | yast2 | UK Mirror Service: sites/download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1/repo/oss |
Combinations of Backports, Factory and Community in Gnome are likely the culprit. Remove them and use unconditional update to roll stuff back.

Thanks. I'll try that. Last night I had already removed a couple of repos such as dev tools, libdvdcss, and Build Service Virtualization. I'll try what you suggested by trimming down the number of GNOME repos. However, I have a question. Doesn't Community vs Factory vs Backports add different packages or are they all very much the same?

Adding all these repos I guess is just a habit that came from my Debian experience.

The key 4 we recommend of which 3 are there by default: OSS, NON-OSS, UPDATES + Packman. That's it. If you need more than that, I suggest you tread very carefully. Ask in the forum here for advice, and don't just follow the first advice that leads you to a OneClick!

The differences in Community/and Backports is more complex than I care to explain ATM. Suffice to say: "Don't use them unless you know how". It would be possible to add one or two, but you need to know what your aim/goal is.
