Choosing news server in Pan

Hi,
I use several news servers, mainly my provider's and my own leafnode server.
Sometimes I check out a corporate server.

I just updated from SUSE 10.0 to openSUSE 11.1.

In the old Pan, I could pick a group from a specific server. I'd check out
new groups by fetching them from the ISP first. If I like it, I pick that
group from my own server, causing it to include it in it's scheduled fetches.

The new pan allows for mutiple server, but it merges all group lists, and
then decides for itself where to get it from.


If it isn't possible to specify the server of origin for a group, is there a
way to set up different Pan profiles, each with it's unique server for
instance?

Mmm, what I've got in Pan are 2 lists:

1) One for the "Subscribed groups" (which holds only the groups I am
subscribed to and get refreshed when I click on each group)

2) And one for "Another groups" (which seems to hold all other groups of the
news server but they are never checked on my side).

Yes, you have subscribed groups and the others.

But the choice of server is the problem, not the choice of group.

i know Pan is 'lighter' and faster and more "Linux-like" (i used it
for a couple of years) ...but, i tried Thunderbird for mail and it
does that ok...and, then i tried it for news and it does that ok
too...[anyway, the Pan just kept getting more and more winders-like
anyway!]

i currently have T-Bird 2.0.0.23 pointed at _several_ different pops
for mail and this and two other nntp servers--each in its own
"account", with specific server, user name/pass, sig, etc etc
etc...and, i _always_ can tell it _which_ newsgroup to get from
_which_ server...no problem..

maybe if the Pan developers know more about what you need than you do,
you might consider giving bloato-slugo Thunderbird a try...

it ain't pine, but it ain't so bad..

It bugged me too and I found that I could install the old Pan
0.14.2-101.i586.rpm in openSUSE 11.0.

If it was just about size and Linux-likeness, it wouldn't be a problem...
I just wouldn't use it. :-)

I use Kmail for email, and slrn for my regular news.

Knode's not bad for most news reading, except the filtering part; that's a
royal pain in the backside.



What Pan does best, is the extraction of binary attachments.

I have a few groups from which I extract everything. Pan gets those from my
leafnode news server.

Other groups, I want to select a few items to be picked. For those I get the
headers directly from the ISP, then DL selectively.



I haven't tried Thunderbird in a while.

The problem is the new Pan is much more stable and faster than the old one.
But then, my 'old' Pan was the one in SUSE 10.0. Perhaps yours was already
working OK.

Hmmm. Tempting...
